Take home from Netmundial 2014
Sao Paulo the beautiful city in Brazil played host to all peoples of the world who came together to define principles and road map for the future evolution of Internet Governance ecosystem in a two-day intensive meeting
The meeting congregated 1,480 stakeholders with active voices, including remote participation, from a diversity of 97 nations.
There were about 30 remote hubs all over the world where participants followed and contributed online, some with video.
The meeting was declared open by the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff.
Reading through the contributions prior to the meeting, the voices of the Civil Society members crying for equal participation with Government, Academia, Private Sector and Technical Community in the governance of the internet was heard most.
Analysis of the of the 188 contributions and 1307 comments on the first summary of 45 paragraphs of the initial submissions to a truly bottom up approach to arriving at the outcome of meeting, shows that over 60% of the input came from the Civil Society. The process of deliberation and discussions during the meeting followed a round robbing method of giving equal speaking opportunity to all the stakeholders in their groups to make comments and voice their concerns.
At the end, the meeting came up with a non-binding NetMundial Multistakeholder Statement which majority of the attendees applauded, others had their reservations, while some Governments opposed to the process and the outcome, as they saw it as non-transparent.
About eight participants from Nigeria attended the meeting mostly from civil society organizations, one from business and yours truly from technical community.
Some of the takeaways for Nigeria are, consensus on: human rights and shared values; culture and linguistic diversity; security, stability and resilience of the internet;, multistakeholder process in Internet governance and development.
On the whole, the initiators were satisfied with the statement. Further information on the process, conversations, submissions, presentations and the final statement could be accessed at www.netmundial.br.

NIG advocates bandwidth subsidy to boost Internet access

A member of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) stakeholder group, the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) has advocated for a subsidized Internet access through the cost of bandwidth to boost adoption and penetration.
President of NIG, Mr. Bayo Banjo made this call in Lagos at the weekend while addressing newsmen as part of the event to herald the 2014 Cyber Security Summit which comes up in July this year, saying that subsidizing internet bandwidth delivery is core to internet access.
According to him, Internet holds the key to unemployment, saying that the government of the day as a matter of urgency should subsidise bandwidth cost for at least five years to spur internet access and adoption among Nigerians.
To encourage low income earners, Banjo said the government must subsidise bandwidth access, so as to enable them buy or have internet access, even if it's by 20 per cent.
“Our problem now with the internet is cost, speed, reliability and availability of devices,” he said, stressing that if all is well as pointed by those in government, “what is stopping the explosion of internet access.”

6th AGM: Nwannenna commends EBOD on .NG brand

Former President, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) and member, NIRA Board of Trustees, Dr. Chris Nwannenna, has commended the Executive Board of Directors (EBOD) of NIRA for promoting the organisation in the global domain name community.
Speaking at the just concluded sixth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NIRA in Lagos, Dr. Nwannenna, who is the chief executive officer of Condata Systems Limited, his experience at the 49th public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Singapore, shows increase in recognition of NIRA among international community.
According to him, it was amazing to note that by mere introduction of oneself from Nigeria, he was associated with NIRA, stressing that it’s an indication that the NIRA Executive Board of Directors (EBOD) have consistently done well in terms of networking and exposure of the NIRA brand, which is .NG.
He urged EBOD to continue to engage the Internet community for the benefit of .NG brand, which will in a long run change the perception of .NG and Nigeria in general as a country.
Dr. Nwannenna further solicited support for NIRA leadership headed by Mrs. Mary Nma Uduma as president in order for them to remain undeterred in the service to motherland. |
