Every month, learn more about one of our members. This month, we sat down with Denis Giorno, President & CEO of Total New Energies USA.

Can you present Total in a few words?
 
Total is one of the world’s most global integrated energy companies, number 10 in the Global Fortune 500 in 2013, before Chevron (11) and Apple (19). Total operates in more than 130 countries across the whole energy value chain.
 
What are the major services you offer? 
 
Total provides energy-related products and services to customers around the world by discovering, producing and transforming Oil and Gas as well as converting two renewable natural resources solar and biomass.
 
What are Total’s links with France?
 
Total SA is a French Group with its headquarter in Paris La Defense but non-French nationals make up two third of our work force - around 99000 employees worldwide. In the US we employ more than 6000 persons in all sectors of activities: from oil and gas production, refining and chemical, marketing and services to gas and power trading and new energies.
 
How are you helping the French American community in the San Francisco Bay Area?
 
Total has invested so far in a dozen of start-up in the Bay area. Total New Energies USA employs more than 30 professionals half of them are French, many have moved to the Bay area  with their family and children. They work either directly for Total or are seconded to companies in which we have taken a participation in like Amyris or SunPower, a company Total has taken the control of in 2011. SunPower is based in San Jose and is a global solar energy solutions and technology leader which provides its world-record efficient solar technology to residential, commercial and utility customers.
