We are happy to announce:

The first issue of the BCT Newsletter!

Who is the BCT?

The Brussels Childbirth Trust (BCT) is a non-profit organisation that supports families and expectant parents around the globe, providing useful information, a wide range of pre- and postnatal services and social activities, all in English, all under one umbrella. With our 1300 member families we are one of the largest international communities in Belgium run entirely by volunteers. Find out more about how we work and what exactly we do on our website at bctbelgium.org.

What is the BCT Newsletter about?

“I wish I had known about the BCT even earlier.” This is a sentence that we hear regularly from new members, once they’ve found us. With this newsletter, we would like to inform you, your organisation and your employees, members and/or clients on a regular basis about our events, activities and new initiatives. In order to help English-speaking families to find us as early as possible.
As this newsletter is a new initiative, we would be very thankful for any feedback – just send us your thoughts to contact@bctbelgium.org.

We hope this information will raise your interest about the BCT and its large support network! For even more information, like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/bctbelgium). Our page brings you updates about our latest activities, stories, ideas and initiatives.

Nearly New Sales

The BCT Nearly New Sales (NNS) are one of the biggest second hand sales in the Brussels area where you can buy and sell everything to do with babies and children - including clothes, equipment, furniture, toys and books. Not only a great way to save money, but also a great recycling initiative. Over the last 25 years, the NNS has taken place twice a year and represents the BCT’s biggest fundraiser. During the 2.5 hours of the event, up to 550 buyers make top quality bargains. Due to the unique way this event is organised, the quality of some 30,000 items offered is outstanding.  Every little t-shirt goes through a quality control and is hand checked by one of the 120 volunteers making this event possible. The spring NNS just took place and the next NNS will be held in October 2014 – we will keep you posted. All details about the NNS are available on our website.

Social and support groups

The BCT represents a very diverse and dynamic community. This is obviously reflected in the large variety of more than 70 social, interest and support groups that form the backbone of the BCT. All groups are initiated and organised by members for members and meet on a regular basis, either in one of the BCT centres or, like the local groups, in various parts of Brussels and surrounding areas. The purpose of the groups can be exchange of information, social contact and entertainment for example in the playgroups, as well as an opportunity to meet people who share similar concerns/interests e.g. adoptive families, single parents etc. One of our latest initiatives include a new playgroup for special needs children and their families as well as the new parenting group “following nature”. Find out more about our group activities on the BCT website.

BCT Talks

The BCT offers a network of services and tools that supply a wide range of information to its members. One tool are the BCT Talks to which speakers are invited who are experts in their field providing practical guidance on family related issues.
The variety of topics covered is reflected in the recent events, e.g. “Building resilience to help children to handle change”, “Neuro-linguistic programming”, “Fitness in pregnancy” or “Belgium for Expats”. Two interesting topics are on the agenda this spring:

First Aid for Parents”, courses held on a regular basis by a certified Red Cross volunteer

Positive Parenting”, an independent educational psychologist explains how the communication style of parents affects children and positive behaviour management works in real life.

Children Cycling Trainings

Being aware of the importance of safe cycling and adequate equipment for our children, the BCT regularly organises children cycling training sessions.

Based on cycling capacity and age of the children, two training courses will be held this spring, one for 3-6 year old beginners and one for 7-12 year old competent cyclists. Both courses include a bike safety check, training exercises as well as a quiz. They are open to all member families.
