This month Profile will be focusing on widespread concerns about the use of mandatory sentencing across Australia.

Recently mandatory sentencing provisions have been enacted in an endeavour to supress alcohol-fuelled violence. At a meeting of all of the Law Council’s Constituent Body representatives it was universally concluded that the use of mandatory sentencing in this context, and others, was something that the Law Council should address.

The consistency and strength of views among the representative institutions around the country opposing the use of mandatory sentencing is not surprising, however, it does highlight an interesting issue.
