Marty's Message

Each year, we honor one College of Professional Studies student who has been heroic. In some cases the recipient has overcome a challenge, in other cases they have advocated for something larger than themselves, and in other cases, they have helped someone in need. Students are nominated for the Heroes Award by CPS faculty or staff, and are selected by our CPS cabinet.

Award recipients receive a medal; and a photo along with a description of their heroism is on display throughout the year next to the dean's office. This year, the CPS Heroes Award was presented to athletic training senior Dillon Huth, who gifted his bone marrow to save a stranger’s life.

The award also comes with a substantial scholarship. Initial funding came from family and friends of Casey Gazdik, a student in our college who died in 2001; but since then, many people have honored their own hero by making contributions to the fund. When someone makes a gift of any size, his or her hero is forever part of the award

Each year the award is presented on behalf of a person who was honored through a gift to the fund. This past weekend, our CPS hero was presented in honor of alum and friend of UWSP Carl Wohlbier '58 who passed away earlier this year (read what Dick Cable and Judy Anderson wrote about Carl here). It was heartwarming to see Carl’s family and friends who were on hand to congratulate Dillon and remember their own hero.

The CPS Heroes Award honors true, real-life heroes–it is truly special.

Marty Loy,
CPS Dean
