SUCCESSFUL BASEBALL WEEKEND
|
|
Nachdem am Samstag bereits die NLA und die 1. Liga Siege feiern konnte, startete am Sonntag auch für die NLB und das neue Zürcher Softballteam die Saison. Während die NLB zwei deutliche Wins gegen die Unicorns holte, hatten die Softballerinnen noch etwas Startschwierigkeiten.
Am kommenden Wochenende lädt die NLB zum Home Opener im Heerenschürli zum Derby gegen die Barracudas ein! Spielbeginn ist am Sonntag um 11:00 Uhr.

CHALLENGERS WIN LOCAL DERBY 14-1

The Challengers NLA-team stopped their three game losing-streak with an easy 14-1 win over the Zürich Lions on Saturday, May 3, but it wasn't an easy game day at all. The start of the double header has been delayed twice due to rain for a total of three hours. Instead of a double header only a single game was played.

NLB-TEAM SWEEPS UNICORNS

The NLB-Team had a successful start into their 2014 campaign, as they swept the Hünenberg Unicorns on Sunday, May 4. The Challengers opened with a 14-4 win, as Kurt Kovac, Carlos Nepomuceno, Michael Torres and Gregory Zingg had two hits each and Nick Lehmann struck out seven in five innings allowing tree runs and seven hits. And the C's added a 16-6 victory over the Unicorns in Game 2 to make it six in-a-row against Hünenberg. On Sunday, May 11 the C's will face the Zürich Barracudas at the Heerenschürli ballpark.
Full disclosure: This is going to be a pretty quick recap because I just started a new job, I have an 8 month old son that wakes me up at 5am every day, and tonight I have to pick up a college friend from the HB who thought that buying a ticket for a bus that got into Zurich at 10pm was a good idea. Also, the Unicorns only posted one of the two games on spielplan and their score-sheets are borderline illegible. But I digress.
When I first learned that the Unicorns had lost their relegation series to Thun last season, I was quite sad. Not just because Huenenberg has a nice field and a quality selection of toilet facilities, but primarily because Thun is so much further away (and has no bathroom facilities AT ALL). Imagine my joy then when I learned that not only was Bern dropping out of NLB, but that they would be replaced by the Unicorns (there was a lot of joy). Now the thing about Huenenberg is - particularly relative to Bern's NLB team - they're not very good. Nice guys, play hard, actually hit the ball pretty well, but they simply cannot make plays in the field ( they had 7 errors in Game 1, and I think that understates the real total by factor of 3). As a result, the two mercy-rule victories posted by the Challengers are nice, but let's not start printing playoff tickets yet.
On a sunny, but cold day in Zug, the Unicorns jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead. Actually, the damage could've been worse had new left-fielder Juan Batista not gunned out a Unicorn runner trying to stretch a single into a double with an absolute laser (Batista seemed to take his time getting to the ball, but his throw beat the runner by such a wide margin that Second-baseman Carlos Nepomuceno had to wait for the runner to get close enough to apply a tag.
Nonetheless, that early lead wouldn't last. In the top of the 2nd, newcomer Michael Recio led off with a bloop single, and then advanced to second when Center-fielder and all-around great guy Alex Gordon followed with a bloop single of his own. A walk to Hendrix Kaempfer loaded the bases, and one batter later Daiki Sato singled to bring Recio around with the Challengers' first run. Shortstop Kurt Kovac followed with a Fielder's Choice grounder to short that brought in Gordon from 3rd, making it 2-1 Challengers. After starting pitcher Nick Lehmann mowed the Unicorns down in order, the Challengers got back to work on offense. Nepomuceno led off with a single, then took third on a double by Batista (Carlos would have scored had he not inexplicably decided to admire the flight of the ball for a good 10 seconds before starting to run!). With runners in scoring position, Recio struck out swinging, but it turned out to be a scoring play for Zurich: the Huenenberg catcher couldn't handle the third strike, and his throw to first skipped into right field. Nepomuceno came into score, Batista took third, and Recio ended up at second. By the time the inning was over, the Challengers had scored 6 times on only 3 hits, aided greatly by 3 Unicorn errors. The game was never close after that. Lehmann struck out 7 over 5 innings of work, and Oli Christen struck out 2 in the bottom of the 6th to close out the 14-4 Zurich victory.
The second game was pretty much more of the same, although the game was actually quite close through the first 3 innings. Leading only 4-3 in the top of the third, coach Rob Sedin exhorted his team to put up some runs. Gordon, at least, was happy to comply: After drawing a lead-off walk, Gordon reached second on a wild pitch, took third on a balk, and then scored on another wild pitch. Unfortunately, no one else was willing to follow Rob's instructions (some people just don't know how to listen), so the lead was only 5-3 (reduced to single run in the bottom of the inning on a controversial balk call on pitcher Yusuke Azuma - let's just say that the lesson is, only the umpires are allowed to grant time, not base-runners!). In the NEXT inning however, the Challengers put the game away with a 10-run outburst, made all the more impressive by the fact that 6 of those runs were scored with 2 outs. The Challengers sent 15 men to the plate that inning, but had only 4 hits (4 errors 3 walks and two hit-batsmen greatly aided the Challenger cause). In fact, the only real drama left in the game once Zurich had batted around was whether Gordon would manage to account for TWO outs in the same inning. Fortunately, in the second pitch of the at-bat, Gordon was drilled in the left kidney by a fastball, thus avoiding bringing shame to himself and most close relatives (phew).
As mentioned above, beating the Unicorns is not exactly like routing the Braves, but the Challengers can be quite satisfied with the results. The pitching looked good, the newcomers got to show what they could do, and two wins are two wins. Now, time to drive out to Sihlquai car park...

1ST LEAGUE-TEAM ADDS TWO WINS

The 1st League-Team continued its winning ways in the 2014 season. The red hot SG TruckStar/Challengers edged the third team of the Zürich Barracudas 5-4, before posting a 21-7 victory over the Yverdon Golgoths on Saturday, May 3. Former Challengers player Gabe Staub struck out 12 to win Game 1, while Kurt Kovac kept the opponents bats quiet in Game 2. The SG TruckStar/Challengers has now a 3-1 record.

SOFTBALL TEAM ZÃœRICH LOSES OPENER

The Softball Team Zürich with players from the Zürich Barracudas and the Challengers played its first game ever on Sunday, May 4 at Rümlang, as they faced the Luzern Eagles. And the season opener was a roller coaster. Both teams blew a four-run lead and the crowd saw several lead changes, a grand slam and a seventh inning rally. The Eagles built a 4-0 lead, before Leandra Simitovic drove in Corina Grass for the first run for the Team Zürich in the bottom of the third inning. And a few batters later with the bases loaded Giulia Oswald belted a grand slam over the center field fence that also scored Simitovic, Ronja Weber and Simona Cellar to make it 5-4.
The Team Zürich extended its lead to four runs in the fourth, but the ladies opened the door again for the Eagles, as they committed four two-out errors in the top of the sixth, that resulted in four runs and a tied ball game. Indeed they grabed the lead again, as Oswald drove in Cellar in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles answered right away with five runs in the seventh to eventually win 13-10.
Game 2 was all Eagles, as they cruised to an easy 26-0 victory for an opening day sweep. The Team Zürich will face next the Bern Cardinals on May 18 at Bern.

BASEBALL NLB vs BARRACUDAS

The NLB-Team will host the Zürich Barracudas on Sunday, May 11 at the Heerenschürli ballpark for their first local derby of the season. Both teams won their opener, as the Barracudas beat the Thun Hunters and the C's swept the Hünenberg Unicorns. Last season the C's won three out of four games against their cross-town rivals. The games will start at 11 am and 2 pm.
Das NLB-Team empfängt am Sonntag, 11. Mai im Baseballstadion Heerenschürli die Zürich Barracudas zu ihrem ersten Stadtderby des Jahres. Beide Teams verzeichneten einen erfolgreichen Saisonauftakt. Die Barracudas besiegten die Thun Hunters, während die Challengers zwei Erfolge gegen die Hünenberg Unicorns verzeichneten. Im vergangenen Jahr gewannen die Challengers drei von vier Direktduellen. Die Spiele beginnen um 11.00 und 14.00 Uhr.

UNTERSTÃœTZE DIE SCHWEIZER JUNIOREN - I BELIEVE IN YOU

Die Schweizer Baseball-Junioren wollen an die Europameisterschaften fahren und brauchen Eure Unterstützung. Dies geht ganz einfach - über die Homepage von I believe in you, der ersten Crowdfunding-Plattform zur Finanzierung von Schweizer Sportprojekten.
Ganz nach dem Motto «von Sportlern für den Sport», entwickelten die beiden Olympiateilnehmer Mike Kurt (Kanu) und Fabian Kauter (Fechten) zusammen mit dem sportbegeisterten Online-Spezialisten Philipp Furrer I believe in you.
Mike Kurt und Fabian Kauter sind Weltklasseathleten in so genannten Randsportarten. Nur dank ihrer Eigeninitiative und der Hilfe aus ihrem privaten Umfeld, schafften es die beiden, ausreichend finanzielle Mittel zu generieren um sich mit den ausländischen Konkurrenten auf Augenhöhe messen zu können. Um dem Schweizer Sport künftig einen neuartigen Zugang zu zusätzlichen privaten MItteln geben zu können, entstand nach den Olympischen Spielen in London die Idee zu I believe in you!
Wie funktioniert I believe in you?
Als Unterstützer kannst du ein beliebiges Projekt - wie z.B. für die U15 und U18 Baseball Nationalmannschaft - auf der Plattform ganz einfach und sicher über Online-Banking, Kreditkarte oder Einzahlungsschein finanziell unterstützen. I believe in you funktioniert nach dem «Alles-oder-nichts-Prinzip». Wird das Finanzierungsziel in der definierten Zeit erreicht, gehen alle Unterstützungsbeiträge an das Projekt. Als Gegenleistung erhältst du dann ein spezielles von dir ausgewähltes «Dankeschön» der Initianten. Wird das Sammelziel verfehlt, bleibt das Geld bei den Unterstützern.
Bei I believe in you nimmst du aktiv an der Sportförderung teil und erweist unseren Schweizer Athleten und Vereinen mit deinem Beitrag einen grossen Dienst. Du ermöglichst es Athleten, ihre sportlichen Ziele zu erreichen. Es war noch nie einfacher, den Schweizer Sport in seiner ganzen Vielfalt so direkt zu unterstützen. Gleichzeitig war es für Sportler nie leichter, zusätzliche private Mittel zu generieren als jetzt mit I believe in you!

VOLKSINITIATIVE ALKOHOLWERBEVERBOT AUF SPORTPLÄTZEN

Am 18. Mai 2014 kommt die Initiative „Keine Werbung für alkoholische Getränke auf Sportplätzen sowie an Sportveranstaltungen im Kanton Zürich“ zur Abstimmung. Die NEIN-Stimmen der Sportlerinnen und Sportler sind nötig! Denn die Initiative bedroht manchen Verein im Breitensport in seiner Existenz.
Nicht nur die finanzielle Unterstützung sondern auch die substantielle logistische Unterstützung wie z.B. im vergangenen Jahr an der Baseball-EM auf dem Heerenschürli (Zelte, Kühlwagen, Theken, Tische, Bänke, etc.) sind bei einer Annahme der Initiative massiv gefährdet.
Diese Einschränkungen würden zudem nur Sportveranstaltungen betreffen und obendrein nur diejenigen im Kanton Zürich. Sowohl ein Quartierfest in Schwamendingen oder ein Grümpelturnier in Baden wären von keinerlei Einschränkungen betroffen.
Die Gefahr der Initiative besteht darin, dass es auf den ersten Blick logisch erscheint, dass Alkohol und Sport nicht vereinbar sind. Die Folgen eines JA würden jedoch viel tiefer gehen, zumal es mit den Sportvereinen genau die Falschen treffen würde.
Der Zürcher Kantonalverband für Sport kämpft als Dachverband der Zürcher Sportvereine an vorderster Front gegen die Initiative. ZKS Geschäftsführerin Yolanda Gottardi sagt: "Die Argumentation des ZKS basiert auf Fakten: Keine andere Institution trägt mehr zur Suchtprävention und zur Integration bei als der Vereinssport. 330 000 Mitglieder, davon rund 90 000 Kinder und Jugendliche, bewegen sich innerhalb der vom Verein organisierten und betreuten Anlagen regelmässig. Studien belegen, dass Sportlerinnen und Sportler weit weniger suchtanfällig sind als Nichtsportler. Diesen für die Gesellschaft relevanten Beitrag kann der Breitensport aber nur leisten, wenn die Vereine auf einer gesunden finanziellen Basis stehen. Ein striktes Werbeverbot für Alkohol ausschliesslich auf Sportplätzen und -veranstaltungen und allein im Kanton Zürich, wie es das Blaue Kreuz mit seiner Initiative fordert, hätten für zahlreiche der 2300 Zürcher Sportvereine massive finanzielle und logistische Auswirkungen und würden sie gegenüber den anderen Schweizer Sportvereinen massiv benachteiligen. Viele von ihnen müssten beliebte Veranstaltungen absagen und Mitgliederbeiträge erhöhen."
Damit die Initiative an der Urne abgelehnt wird, braucht es eine breite Unterstützung - auch deine!
