Ovitz Wins First Place and $50K in 2014 Rochester Regional Business Plan Contest


Ovitz Corp. won first place and $50,000 ($25,000 in cash) out of a pool of 22 applicants in the 2014 Rochester Regional Business Plan Contest on Friday during the Celebration of Entrepreneurship Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Rochester. Ovitz is run by several UR students: Felix Kim ’14 (BS in Optical Engineering); Pedro Vallejo-Ramirez ’16 (BS in Optical Engineering); Samuel Steven ’13 (BS in Optical Engineering), ’14 (MS in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management); Ana Garcia ’14 (BA in International Relations and Affairs) and KEY Scholar; Len Zheleznyak ’05 (BS in Optical Engineering), ’06 (MS in Optical Engineering), ’14 (PhD in Optical Engineering); and Aizhong Zhang ’14 (MS in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management) and PhD Candidate in Optical Engineering. RWP Energy Inc., led by David Curry ’13S (MBA), took third place.


Ovitz and SmartDialysis Recognized in New York Business Plan Competition

Ovitz also won second place and $5,000 in the Biotechnology/Health Care category of the New York Business Plan Competition, an intercollegiate statewide competition hosted by the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany. SmartDialysis, run by  Li (Adam) Deng ’14 (MS in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management); Steven Gillmer ’11 (BS in Mechanical Engineering), ’13 (MS in Mechanical Engineering), PhD Candidate in Mechanical Engineering; Kenneth Goodfellow, PhD Candidate in Optical Engineering; Christopher Wong ’16 (BS in Computer Science); Aizhong Zhang ’14 (MS in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management), PhD Candidate in Optical Engineering; and Bowei Zhang ’14 (MS in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management), took the Rookie of the Year Award in the same category.


Mark Ain Business Model Competition Finals on 5/13

The eighth annual Mark Ain Business Model Competition Finalists’ Presentations and Judging will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 13 in Schlegel 407. Congratulations to the five finalist student teams: ClarElast, MelioraTx, Ovlay, PROTEA Medical, and SmartDialysis. Four entrepreneur and investor judges—Mark Ain '67S (MBA) of Kronos Inc., Edward Ackley ’53, ’64S (MS) of The Filter Store Plus, Peter Gregory ’97S (MBA) of BrightGarden Strategies, and Gregg Steinberg of Charlemagne Holdings—will announce the winners of $13,500 in cash prizes after the presentations. A reception will follow. Students: Get Your Venture Funded through NCIIA

Do you have the next great business idea? 43NORTH is awarding $5 million in cash prizes – including a top prize of $1 million – to the best entrepreneurs, startups and teams from around the world. Enter the competition online by May 31, 2014.


UR Students: Apply to the Student Incubator

The University of Rochester has opened student incubator space at High Tech Rochester, made possible by Simon alumnus Mark S. Ain ’67S (MBA). Student Incubator companies will have access to all client amenities within the HTR Lennox Tech Enterprise Center, as well as access to High Tech Rochester’s Director of New Ventures and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who can provide additional coaching, mentoring, and connections. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; Rochester students at any level of study can apply. The incubator is accessible on the bus loop.
