Origins: Current Events in Historical Perspective Explores the Crisis in Ukraine
Ohio State experts discuss the crisis among Ukraine, Russia and the European Union/U.S. in a two-part History Talk podcast, “The Fate of Crimea, the Future of Ukraine.” Featured experts include Myroslava Mudrak, professor emeritus, history of art; Nick Breyfogle, associate professor, history and Origins co-editor; Trevor Brown, director; Rudy Hightower, lieutenant commander, United States Navy (retired); and graduate assistant, John Glenn School of Public Affairs. They are joined by Sergei Zhuk, associate professor of Russian and East European History at Ball State University. Origins is a project of the Public History Initiative and eHistory in the Department of History that has written extensively on Russia and eastern Europe, including two articles that will appear in May on the current events in Ukraine.

AWARDS
Byron Hamann Receives Award
Byron Hamann, assistant professor, history of art, received the Inaugural Prize in Digital Renaissance Research from the Renaissance Society of America for his article "Object, Image, Cleverness: The Lienzo Tlaxcala," Art History 36, no. 3 (2013) pp. 518-45.
Industrial Design Student Wins Award
Industrial design student Austin Scott won the 2014 Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Central Region Student Merit Award. He was chosen to represent Ohio State by a group of professional designers, and competed with six other IDSA-recognized design programs in the region. He is one of five students in the U.S. to win the award, and will present his work at the 2014 IDSA international design conference in Austin, Texas. Scott’s projects revolved around problem-solving and developing a visual brand language, and included a hard hat for Caterpiller and a hand harness designed for a golf bag.
Chemisty and Biochemisty Awards
Christopher Durr received a 2014-2015 Presidential Fellowship awarded in the Graduate School's spring competition. Durr is a member of Malcolm Chisholm's research group. Brennan Walder, a member of Philip Grandinetti's research group in chemical physics, also received a Presidential Fellowship for 2014-2015.

Remembering Chemistry Professor Emeritus Sheldon Shore
Chemistry Professor Emeritus Sheldon G. Shore died on Friday, April 4. Each year, the department sponsors the Shore Lecture. This year’s lecture, given by Professor Peter J. Stang of the University of Utah, is Friday, April 25, at 4:10 p.m. in 1008 Evans Laboratory. Attendees will reflect on Shore’s many contributions to the field of inorganic chemistry. A Memorial follows the lecture at 5:30 p.m. All are invited to attend to remember and honor Professor Shore.
Staff Career/Manager Development Grant Applications Accepted
HR and USAC invite staff to apply for Staff Career Development Grants (SCDG), awards up to $1,000-1,500 for professional development activities. Deadline: April 30. The Staff Manager Development Grant (SMDG) provides up to $1,000 for managers and supervisors. Deadline: May 15.

Queer Places, Practices and Lives II Symposium
This free, two-day conference will be held at the Ohio Union, May 16-17, featuring keynote speakers Sara Ahmed and Eli Clare along with 48 panels composed of more than 160 presenters from across the U.S. and around the world. Registration required.
