Patient Safety Corner
Canadian Patient Incident Disclosure Guidelines
Imagine that an incident happened to you or a loved one while you were receiving care in the hospital - let's say you received the wrong medication. Wouldn't you want to know what happened and isn't this your right to know what happened? Achieving a culture of patient safety requires open, honest and effective communication between healthcare providers and their patients. Patients are entitled to information about themselves, and about their medical condition or illness, including the risks associated with healthcare delivery.

The Four Moments of Hand Hygiene
Before entering the patient's room or after leaving the patient's room ... do you still have doubts about what is the proper hand hygiene protocol? Why should you care? Because healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are the most common serious complication of hospitalization. In Canada, it has been estimated that 220,000 incidents of HCAIs occur each year, resulting in more than 8,000 deaths. And if you are like most healthcare providers, you assume that you are already practicing good hand hygiene, yet research shows us that less than 40% of healthcare providers are compliant with good hand hygiene practices. Here is your chance to see how well you are doing.

Accreditation Corner
Why Accreditation Matters
Carecor participates in the Accreditation Canada program. Accreditation helps organizations like ours improve our performance for the benefit of our clients and the health system.
We have chosen the Accreditation Canada program to help us pursue excellence, improve our performance, and guide our ongoing quality and safety initiatives. We do this as a mark of pride and as a way to create a strong and sustainable focus on quality and safety within our organization. It helps us:
* Assess our services and find out where to focus our improvement efforts
* Develop standardized processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs
* Mitigate risk and support the uptake of best practices
* Build a culture of quality, safety, and excellence
* Identify leading and commendable practices
* Publicly promote our commitment to offering safe, high-quality services
Not all agencies have achieved the accreditation designation like Carecor has. You are in good company!

- Make sure you read the recently revised Employee/Contractor Handbook that was emailed to everyone as there are new changes that have been updated.
- Ensure you always sign in and sign out on the unit where you are working, or if there is a staffing office you must sign in/out at the nursing office, otherwise we have no proof you have worked.
- Call in your availability every Monday and keep it up to date. If your availability changes, you must call the Carecor Staffing Office right away as we book you based on your availability.
- A reminder to staff who are refusing a lot of assignments, cancelling assignments or not replying - we do reserve the right to place you 'on hold' until your file is reviewed
