Welcome

Gypsy Wives

This month we are doing the Crazy Anne Block. As I hinted last month we are adding something extra this month. Jen Kingwell had called for an 1/8th yard piece of Linen to be sent with the 4th month fabrics but I know some people don't like to use linen in their quilts so I sent along a second 1/8th yard piece, as well, of a pretty crosshatch print called Sketch. The Intense BOMS will have a dark grey Sketch and the Calms will have a light grey Sketch. You can choose to use one or the other or both as our sample maker, Jen Altman, did. You will see in the pictures in the book that Jen K used the linen in a few of the blocks so you can sprinkle it, or the Sketch, in here or there, as you like, as well.

It has come to our attention that there are a few mistakes in the book beyond what we originally thought. I have contacted Jen Kingwell about it and she has acknowledged that their are more mistakes that she hasn't posted about yet. She is in the process of sending along a sheet with corrections but in the mean time I will do my best to keep you posted as to items that we find as we are working along.

The filler blocks on page 21 are very confusing. Both blocks have the incorrect size listed as finished size of block. The first set of directions on the page makes two blocks. The first one should be 4 1/2" unfinished and the second should be 6 1/2" unfinished. The second block has two mistakes the first being that the unfinished size of the block should be 5 1/2" not 2 1/2". In the directions on the last step for the block it says to cut a 3 3/4" square in quarters for the corners of the block but it should be a 4 3/4" square. Thanks to Johanna for bringing these to light.

I am hoping to help you all along with this whole block of the month by sending along photo tutorials whenever necessary. There are a few confusing blocks and as I did last month I want to make them as easy as possible for you. I am not sure how many of you are caught up but I know some people are still having trouble with the Pershing block from Month 2 so I have made a tutorial for you. You can find it here. I will be referring back to this tutorial sometimes when we need to use the techniques we used here. I don't want to write the same tutorial a million times :)

Also there are a couple helpful hints below for the Crazy Anne block. It is a pretty simple block but sometimes we forget where to line up those pesky triangles so this will take some of the guess work out for you.

If you are local check the calendar on the website for the Saturday each month that we will be sewing the Gypsy Wife together. The next one is this Saturday 4/26 from 11am to 1pm. Please RSVP so we can save you space.

Here are the pictures of this months blocks.

Intense

Calm

As you can see there is a pesky half rectangle part to making this star. It isn't hard but it does help to know where to line up those points so that you end up with a rectangle after you sew them together.

If you line up the rectangles so that there is about 1/4 inch of the point hanging over each end you should come up with a great rectangle piece once it is sewn together. If you aren't sure you have it right just baste it first and open it up to double check, then no harm no foul.

Second because we have been lining up those triangles a bit offset in this block and in the Pershing block. I wanted to show you that when you are sewing the triangles to the squares in this block you don't offset the side that is a right angle. Just line the square up with the right angle of the triangle and let the point hang off the other end.

If you have already done your Pershing block and it wasn't very clear to you, you might want to go ahead and review the tutorial above. I will refer back to it in the coming months when we talk about construction of the other blocks.
