  • Monday 5th May from 7.30 - Enjoy a Bank Holiday social get together at the Black Bull's Head, Openwoodgate. This pub has won a string of CAMRA awards so there should be some tasty ales to sample.

Neighbourhood Plan for Belper

For those of you who actively use the Transition Belper facebook you will already be aware that the Belper Town Council voted to progress the Neighbourhood Plan for Belper. The next step is for the council to agree the boundary of the plan, which we believe should be the whole of Belper including Milford, Makeney, Belper Lane End and Blackbrook, at the Council meeting in June.
In the meantime Transition Belper and the Belper Civic Forum are keen to hear from anybody who would like to get involved in the steering group to be set up to develop this plan.
Neighbourhood Plan Roadmap Guide -

A significant site within any Neighbourhood Plan for Belper will be the development of the land between the A6 and the River Derwent, currently owned by Tesco - see below.

Meadows Edge Tesco Public Consultation
Nailers (Belper Town Football Club) 1st May 2pm until 7pm

We have held three Belper In Transition meetings over the last 6 months, the last two have included representatives from Tesco. We are pleased to say Tesco have now developed a master plan proposal to progress the development of the derelict site between the A6 and the River Derwent and they will be presenting it at a Public Consultation at Nailers (Belper Town Football Club) on Thursday 1st May from 2pm until 7pm. This has been extended from 6pm following our request. The master plan is a requirement of the supplementary planning document developed following significant public consultation a couple of years ago. Whatever happens on the site must meet the requirements of the SPD. Click on the link below to read the document.

Part of the master plan and consultation will be a proposal about potential housing development on the area off of Derwent Street that was flattened last year, in preparation for an outline planning application to be submitted by Tesco in the next few weeks.
This is a real opportunity for Transition Belper to help shape the future of Belper to make it a more sustainable and resilient town. Please come along to the consultation, next Thursday 1st May or let us know what you think is important about the future development of this very important site in Belper. What do you want to see 'low carbon' housing ? space to grow food ? employment space ? community space ?
Let us know, get involved !

CREATIVITY & WELLBEING GROUP

Interested in how we can create art or craft in response to transition?
Or maybe you have a skill you want to share or a skill to improve on?
Our first meeting will be at Fresh Ground on the 3rd May at 10am, where between fantastic coffee and cake we will bing-boing ideas between us and have some creative fun, while exploring your ideas in a supportive, creative group.  This first meeting will concentrate on what you would like from a creativity group (an exciting name?), if you have suggestions and can't make this meeting, please email them to me,  Christine and I can add them into the pot of colourful ideas.

Belper Goes Green - Can you help out?

We are looking for volunteers to help out with setting up, taking down and helping to ensure the smooth running of the festival over the weekend of 31st May and 1st June. Specifically:

  • Friday 30th May - we need to put the market stalls together and erect gazebos as well as marking out designated areas and starting to put displays together
  • Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June - helpers needed to:
    • direct traffic at the gate either to allow permitted vehicles or redirect to the hospital or Derwent Street Car parks
    • staff the information desk for Transition Belper and festival information, newsletter sign ups etc
    • staff the Transition Belper Travel and Transport and Energy Group stands to give specific information and advice
    • act as stewards to monitor behaviour, attendance levels, health and safety and compliance with no smoking signs in marquees
    • be on hand as a designated first aider
    • give assistance to stallholders and workshop leaders to enable them to take breaks
  • Monday 2nd June - we need to oversee taking down the marquee and tents and dismantle the market stalls and gazebos and pack away. A volunteer with a van would be helpful to take chairs, tables etc back to their storage.

The festival sessions have been divided into 2 hour slots; 9 - 11, 11 - 1, 1 - 3 and 3 - 5 and there will be refreshment vouchers issued to volunteers. You can volunteer either by emailing David George or go online and complete the Doodle scheduler
Publicity - please print out and display the flyer where it can be seen by many
Around mid-May we'll bring you all the latest details in another packed Belper Goes green special

Travel & Transport Group

Car-free Challenge

We invite you to swap one journey a week in June and July, which you usually make by car, and make it instead by walking, cycling, using the bus or using the train. This will help you reduce your carbon footprint, could save you money, time and give you exercise!
Entries will be entered into a PRIZE DRAW, to win a Transition Belper Goodie Bag.
If each household in Belper swapped a 1 mile car journey, once a week for a year, this would collectively total 499,200 miles not travelled in a car and would save nearly 100 tonnes of CO2.
(Based on 9600 households, using a small car with emissions of 0.2kg CO2 per mile = 99.84 tonnes.

How to enter: Car-free Challenge sheets will be available to download from the Transition Belper Website, will be available at the Belper Goes Green Festival or you can contact David George for a copy (contact details below).

Tony Cooper is opening up his home at 2 Malthouse Lane, Nether Heage on Saturday 10th May from 11.00 - 5.00 and on Monday 12th May from 11.00 - 2.00 so the public can see, first-hand, various energy efficiency measures installed including a condensing boiler fitted in 2007, solar PV fitted to garage roof in 2010, a small conservatory added to reduce heat leakage, a 2nd fireplace opened up to enable more biomass space heating, fitting the majority of house lights with LED, use of night time electricity & timers to run some appliances and changing electric shower to gas.
