CLUB PROJECTS

Whitelion Bailout Event

You'd never imagine that the genteel city of Adelaide had a spooky side, but venture five minutes from the CBD and get ready for a spine-tingling experience at The Adelaide Gaol as part of the Whitelion Annual Bail Out Event

The ikd building, one of South Australia's premier heritage sites, is the venue for our second Adelaide Bail Out on Friday 2 May 2014

The 19th century-architecture, original cell-blocks, the hanging tower, gallows, yards, and prisoner graves create the perfect setting for a truly unique experience.

Bail Out is Whitelion's national fundraising and awareness campaign. Bail Out provides a unique opportunity to step into the shores of a young person that has been disconnected from our community due to a range of factors, such as abuse and neglect, drug and alcohol dependency and poverty.

To get involved, participants (known as inmates) are required to register online raise bail to secure their release, with the minimum bail set at $1,000 per participant. The Bail Out "lock up" events expose inmates to life on the inside with activities that simulate prison life. Inmates will be stripped of possessions, fingerprinted, photographed and subjected to interrogation. They will also appear before a magistrate in a mock court proceeding before being sente3nce to some cell time where there will be the opportunity to get on the phone to reguest some final donations. Duriing their incarceration they will hear stories from real people and the issues they face.

Who knows what may happen in a venue where over the past 147 years over 300,000 prisoners were incarcerated, ending as recently as 1988. Do you dare to walk in their footsteps?

Or, if you have a friend, relative, colleague, boss or spouse that you'd like to see locked up, contact us

WHEN: Friday 2nd May 2014
TIME: 5:30pm - 11:30pm
WHERE: The Old Adelaide Gaol, 18 Gaol Rd, THEBARTON SA (map)
RSVP: Donate or Inquire (email)

Asylum Speakers Awareness Program

The Asylum Speakers Program (ASAP) continues to cultivate human connections throughout its active involvement with Rotary Clubs and other community groups in Adelaide. The Rotary Club of Morialta welcomed Asylum Speakers Kaylene, Greg and Nelson on March 5. This provided an opportunity for fellow Rotarians to discuss the challenges that face people seeking asylum in Australia

As part of the "Harmony Day" celebrations, the ASAP team was invited to present at the Migration Museum. the fifty participants that took part in the ASAP workshop embarked in an imaginary journey that depicted the challenges that an Australian could potentially face, if their homeland was plagued with conflict and destruction. Through the use of story telling, Asylum Speakers Melissa and Nelson attempted to shed some light on some of the dire circumstances that could push people to flee their home countries to seek protection somewhere.

In an attempt to reach out to community groups and to build partnerships with like-minded networks, Asylum Speakers Melissa and Nelson also presented at Change The Conversation. This is a forum that brings together people in the humanitarian sector to explore practical ways to support asylum seekers living in the community.

If you would like to host an Asylum Speaker, please contact us via email (asap.rotary@gmail.com)
