Step Up

The Alliance, in conjunction with the Youth Leadership Council, announces its 2014 youth leadership conference.  Dedicated towards fostering leadership skills among the Asian American youth, the conference offers high school students and incoming college freshmen a unique opportunity to develop skills for future leaders.

The conference exposes participants to the type of knowledge and training necessary for success in the new millennium.  Participants’ days are packed from morning to night with activities, including interactive leadership exercises, speaker seminars and career management workshops.  In addition, there are plenty of opportunities to build lasting friendships with fellow participants.  Past conferences have focused on building leadership talent, communication, career development, political empowerment, and self and social awareness.  This year’s conference theme is #StepUp@YLCHouston, which incorporates identifying causes or passions, whether light-hearted or serious, local or global, for which they step up.  Stepping up can be as simple as raising awareness about an issue through social media to something more complicated, like creating a non-profit organization for a cause.  Through a multitude of fun and educational activities, the program will empower and enable you to step up for what they believe in.

Utilizing the talents and experiences of college students and young professionals to facilitate small group discussions and to serve as mentors of the high school participants, the conference incorporates various topic-related exercises and activities to enhance and reinforce leadership skills and ideals.

This year’s conference returns to the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas, June 27-29, 2014.  Scholarships are inclusive of roundtrip travel, accommodations, registration and meals.

Lasting friendships are made among Alliance sponsored participants.
