Greetings! Here is my April update.

Street Renaming
There are 22 pairs of streets in Newton with duplicate names, including several in Newtonville. City public safety officials believe believe these duplicate names puts citizens at risk, so there is interest in renaming the smaller of the two duplicates. (Click here for the list of streets.)

Court St
The Mass. Dept. of Housing & Community Development is doing a site visit at 79-83 Court Street tomorrow as part of the process of making a determination of site eligibility for the 36-unit 40B development proposed for the site.

Austin St
A citizen petition signed by 50 residents was submitted on Feb 3rd to 1) reverse the declaration of surplus of the Austin St lot; 2) recommend that the Mayor withdraw the offer to sell the land; and 3) change the zoning from the current Mixed-Use 4 (which allows 5 stories). The petition came up for a vote in front of the full Board of Aldermen last night. I requested a delay in the vote until after a public hearing related to the zoning request takes place on May 15 at City Hall. That request was voted down 11-9 but then was "chartered" which means it was put off until the next Board meeting on May 5th.

Medical Marijuana Dispensary
A public meeting related to the medical marijuana dispensary proposed for Newtonville was held last week with about forty people in attendance. A lot of good questions were asked and answered, and a summary of those is being compiled for those who are interested but could not attend the meeting. I will share that document as soon as it is ready (by early next week or sooner). Another meeting will be held Thurs, May 29 at 7:30 PM, location TBD.

Newton Serves is this Sunday! Sign up here to volunteer, there are lots of great projects in Newtonville and beyond.

Office Hours
I hold office hours on the last Fri of the month at 9am at the Newton Senior Center – next one is April 25.  (The last one was packed!) Hope to see you there.

With warmest regards (and hopes that spring will ever actually arrive),

Emily
