President's Corner
It is hard to believe that the 2013-2014 ASHRAE year is coming to an end. We have enjoyed a number of great meetings and events during the past 12 months. Personal highlights include a tour of the new Signature Engineering Building at Virginia Tech and Julian DeBullet’s presentation on refrigerants. I hope you also have enjoyed our meetings and events. Please join me in thanking our Vice President and CTTC chair Anna Stanley who has done a great job in planning our monthly meetings.
We received two thank you letters from VMI Cadets Luke Butler and Jonathan Reardon. Luke will be soon attending Virginia Tech where he has been admitted into the Ph.D. program in Engineering Science and Mechanics. Jonathan also plans to further his education with graduate studies. Jonathan is very interested in the application of the terminal sciences and is looking for a summer internship in the industry.
I would also like to thank all those who attended the ASHRAE webcast “Buildings in Balance: IEQ and Energy Efficiency”. Finally I hope to see many of you at our golf tournament and final meeting at Star Hill Brewery.
I look forward to working with you in the future!

Dear Mr. Southall,
I would like to thank you for accepting me as one of the ASHRAE scholarship recipients. This award will definitely help support my future studies. Currently, I am a senior mechanical engineering student at VMI. I have always been interested in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. I am currently taking a design course on heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. This course has been great because I have had the chance to apply my favorite subjects to practical design problems.
My future studies will continue to focus on these main areas. I am currently planning to accept an offer to attend graduate school. However, in the near future, I hope to obtain summer employment, particularly in the HVAC industry.
Again, I want to thank you for the support that this scholarship has given me.

Dear Mr. Southall,
I am writing this letter to express my gratitude for the generous scholarship given to me by the Roanoke ASHRAE chapter. The scholarship will help me to further my engineering education.
At the Virginia Military Institute, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree with a Minor in Applied Mathematics. Upon graduation, I will be attending the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. I have been accepted into the Direct Ph.D. program in the Engineering Science and Mechanics department, with guaranteed funding as either a graduate teaching assistant or graduate research assistant.

'Immersion Cooling' Technology for Data Centers a 'Potential Game Changer'
MAPLEWOOD, Minn.—3M Co. recently demonstrated a new cooling fluid for large computer systems that the company says reduces the need for air conditioning and cuts energy costs by up to 95%. Partnering with Intel Corp. and SGI, 3M developed the technology, called immersion cooling, which involves placing equipment inside a cooling bath of 3M's Novec fluid. The system looks like a large fish tank. SGI manufactures the hardware, Intel’s microprocessors sit inside the tank, and are cooled by Novec fluid, which is clear like water. However, the fluid dries immediately, leaves no residue and is safe to electronics. Data centers reportedly consume about 2% of all U.S. energy.

Plans Unveiled for New Tallest Building in North America
NEW YORK—Manhattan-based design firm MJM+A Architects recently unveiled designs for the Hudson Spire, set to be the tallest structure in North America and third-tallest in the world. Once completed, the 1,800 ft (550 m) tall tower will surpass the One World Trade Center in the United States, and will be the world’s third-tallest building after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Royal Clock Tower. The 110-story mixed-use luxury development will house high-end commercial establishments, several hotels, offices and residential units in the first 85 stories. The top 25 stories will be reserved for luxury residences. The design for Hudson Spire follows the “super tall/super thin” strategy of other recent luxury high-rise residences, mandated by the space, cost and zoning realities of Manhattan property.

New LED Bulb Combines Efficiency and Beauty
HONG KONG—A Hong Kong-based startup company has developed a visually appealing and energy-efficient lightbulb. Nanoleaf’s LED bulb resembles an origami project—its body is made of folded silicon instead of glass. According to the company, this design makes it extremely energy efficient. The bulb is designed to provide 87% energy savings compared to existing LED bulbs. It also is designed to produce 133 lumens per watt, almost double the efficiency of current 22-watt bulbs. The manufacturer says its increased energy efficiency also leads the bulb to produce less heat.

Oklahoma House Passes Solar Surcharge Bill
OKLAHOMA CITY—A bill that would allow regulated electric utilities to impose a surcharge on customers who install rooftop solar panels or small wind turbines has passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives. The bill was supported by the state’s major electric utilities, but drew opposition from solar advocates, environmentalists and others. Customers who already have rooftop solar or small wind turbines systems installed wouldn’t be affected by the bill. The bill passed the Senate last month and now heads to Gov. Mary Fallin for her signature. The new tariffs would begin by the end of 2015.
