The Way You Do the Things You Do

It was 1964 when The Temptations doo-wapped their way to #11 with the R&B hit The Way You Do the Things You do.1 Listen/watch here.

As “gospel-driven” champions of life, it should be quite natural for this same tune to permeate our lives in two directions. First, we sing it back to Jesus as we regularly behold the way He does the things He does in our lives in general and in forgiving our sins in the gospel in particular.

You really swept me off my feet, you made my life complete

As consistently gospel-astonished people who sing to Jesus, we are transformed from the inside out into Christ-like people who naturally do things the way He does things! When this happens, we might begin to hear the same chorus coming back toward us from others. And though we recognize that others’ singing is ultimately a tribute to Jesus, we can still enjoy the words as those adopted by and associated with Him in the gospel.

You really swept me off my feet, you made my life complete

These two song-movements invite a few soul-searching questions. How often do you marvel at the way Jesus does the things He does in your life? How often do you sing this song to Him? How often do you find yourself naturally doing the things He does as a by-product of your astonishment with Him? And how often do you hear others singing to Jesus as they experience Him through you as a champion of life and otherwise?

Remember, the answer to all these questions hangs on regularly beholding Jesus and the way He does the things He does! Hmm, I hear a chorus coming on…

You really swept me off my feet, you made my life complete

Multiplied

A multiplied Life Team enjoys expanding impact by equipping its church and other Life Teams to affirm life. To be multiplied is to avoid the Life-Team-does-it-all syndrome. Along with God’s blessing, to be multiplied requires a Life Team to equip its church, which means to fit its church for service in the life arena. Equipping (and therefore, multiplying) includes informing, encouraging, coaching, and directing a congregation in life-affirming service. To multiply, you must first recognize that it is important! Then, when your Team discusses initiatives, you must truly wrestle with the question, “OK, so how are we actually going to equip/multiply this kind of life-affirming service in our congregation?”

Clarify Goals

One surefire way to lose motivated Life Team members and deflate your Team’s morale is to ignore goal-setting. Don’t fall into that trap. Part of your job as a leader, especially regarding specific Team projects, is to initiate goal-setting. One way to do that is to ask, “What’s our next step?” Then help the Team form goals that specific, attainable, and measurable (S.A.M.). Be sure goals are recorded in the meeting minutes. Encourage Team members in-between meetings to reach their goals. Transfer last meeting’s goals to this meeting’s agenda and ask for specific updates on goal progress at the meeting. This is a very important job for you as a leader and doing it will help energize your Team.

I often employ “redemptive analogy” in teaching biblical truth. This means that I see God’s truth – as revealed exclusively in the Bible – embedded and illustrated everywhere, including in pop culture and creation. Psalms 50:6 and 97:6 demonstrate this basic idea. By employing “redemptive analogy,” I am not claiming that pop culture or creation are sources of truth, but that they often illustrates truth. As I do this, and as you consider doing it, be advised to measure all things by Scripture, and when looking at culture and creation for illustrations and reminders, “eat the meat and spit out the bones.”
