Run Big Photo Contest 2014!

After a successful Run Big Photo Contest last year, it's finally time to do another one.  Last year we asked people to send in their Run Big photos from around the world.  We had two great winners - Shirley with her photo in New Zealand and Kelly with her moose photo from Alaska.
This year, we're going to change things up a bit.  Send in your pictures of people wearing their Big Island Running Company gear, but the photo subjects must be making a shaka!  We'll gather the photos and share them over Facebook throughout the month.  Then we'll pick 5 finalists and submit those to a vote in our newsletter and on Facebook.  The winner will receive a prize package of more Big Island Running Company gear!

You can submit your photos by email to melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com or you can upload them to our Facebook page. So go have fun with this and make sure you wear your Run Big, Run Aloha or Big Island Running Company apparel.  We can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Tracking Tools

Last month we teased that we've brought in Garmin as a new vendor. We now carry several different GPS models, as well as their popular Vivofit fitness band:

  • Vivofit - Garmin's fitness bands will let athletes and non-athletes alike track their activity and receive data feedback on steps taken, calories burned, and distance covered.  It can also track your sleeping patterns, and it will even track heart rate using any ANT+ heart rate strap (not included).  Analyze all that data through Garmin Connect.
  • Forerunner 10 - These colorful watches provide style and basic function for a GPS watch, tracking distance, pace and calories. These watches are extremely easy to use and start with the simple push of a button.
  • Forerunner 220 - This watch provides all the run data you could ever want, including distance, pace, and heart rate (with additional heart rate strap). The colorful display makes it easy to see all of your splits, and the watch's Bluetooth compatibility makes it easy to shame all of your Facebook friends.
  • Forerunner 910XT - Garmin's top-of-the-line triathlon watch collects data through all of your swim, bike and run activities, including lap and open water swimming. And the 20-hour battery will still be going when you cross the finish line on Alii Drive.

Runner Spotlight

This month we'd like to welcome Cary Aurand to the Big Island Running Company ohana.  Cary and her boyfriend Brian moved to the Big Island last year from Michigan. In April, Cary left accounting job behind to become a shoe specialist.

Q: When did you start running? A: I ran sprint distances in middle school and high school. I started running longer distances at the end of college and kept going.

Q: Where do you usually do your runs (treadmill, roads, any favorite routes)? A: Currently, Walua Road is my favorite place to run. I'm up there at least once a week.

Q: What are your current running goals? A: My goals are to break 7 minutes/mile in the 5K and qualify for Boston. The 5K and the marathon are my favorite distances.

Q: What is your favorite pre-run or pre-race meal? A: I'm all about the post-run meal! I know it was a good run if I have a craving for french toast and french fries.

Q: What is your favorite running memory? A: During my first marathon, we ran through a park in Grand Rapids, Michigan during fall. The changing colors of the leaves and the beauty of the season made me realize that runners get the opportunity to see and experience so much around them.

Q: What do you like best about running? A: I love cookies. More running = more cookies.

Q: What do you like least about running? A: I love cookies. Less running = less cookies.

Q: What are some of your other interests outside of running? A: I love to bake.

Q: Is there anything else you want people to know about you? A: I love coffee, animals, birthdays, and the color pink. I dislike swimming, 10Ks, painting my nails, and bad grammar.
A beautiful Easter Sunday morning run on Alii Drive.
