APRIL 2014

"Tell your story, and we all have a story. Know what it is you want to say. Remove the obvious; keep the meaningful. These are some of the nuggets I gained during the two weekends that I and students from Warren Wilson College enjoyed the wonder that is Azule. In early April, student leader Ana Lara and I learned to get to the heart of our message in the "Capturing the Story" workshop. Two weeks later, amid budding trees and the chirps of spring peepers, twelve students and colleague Lyn O'hare and I were able to retreat to Azule to build our group, share strengths, and plan for our collaboration with the community of Maniva, Para, Brazil where we will be traveling in May. We shared story circles, food, fellowship with Gwylene and Camille, and finished with a Listening project to document one another's appreciation of Azule. Came away refreshed and inspired. Thanks Azule." Lorrie Jayne

EVERYONE DESERVES ART, A LEARNING EXPERIENCE OR REST!

In this issue, photographs are by Donna Cooper Hurt, Irina Koehler, Rena Lash, Manoj Sepiastory and participants to the Portrait Project.

"This young group of children (7), I am part of, (ages 8 - 10 years old) visited Azule. We stayed for a week long retreat from April 21 to April 25, 2014. We come from the Montessori School of Cumming, which is located near Atlanta, GA. All along the year at my school we had a fundraiser called Fundraising Friday, and using this and other fundraisers we raised money for trips like this one to Azule. Also, we did all the setup, cleanup, and helped with the cooking for all of the meals. My group participated in various workshops in and out of Azule, for example, clay workshop, weaving, stone carving, also visiting places like a saw mill, stone quarry, etc. We also enjoyed 2 hikes, fishing, visiting and meeting students of the Hot Springs Community Learning Center and soaking in a natural mineral bath at Hot Spring's Spa. I loved our stay and wish to return some day! (So do all my classmates!)"  - Jaeden Amiri-Owens (age 10)

The children also have made a small movie with the help of Mr. Keith, who did all the recording and editing. Enjoy it at: https://vimeo.com/92896403

Congratulations to Raji Balaram,  Irina Koehler and Keith Benjamin for seeing the educational potential of the community of Azule. And thank you so much to Pete Dixon, Harold Finley,Gwylene Gallimard, Andrew Hesed, Christopher Jayne, Selinde Lanier, Jean-Marie Mauclet, Cecilia Rawlins, Camille Shafer and Lynda Wheelock, for responding to the call.

"I've attached a poem that I wrote while I was at Azule."

from Shannon Gallagher, a March Resident at AZULE

MOUNTAIN POEM #1 (Papa)

Angular forest
fading into gradients.

Hazy in the distance,

each tree conjures life into the Land of The Sky,

and the highway continues beyond the horizon.

A hawk cuts through the mountain air,

wheeling proudly between the blue heavens above me.

I know him.

I recognize his striking wingspan, a dark silhouette

against the azule sky.

I roll down the window,

tilt my head back as I breathe him in.

"The transformation that occurred within our group could not have manifested as graciously had we not been in the beautiful and deeply accommodating environment of AZULE. This place has nourished me and allowed for a sweet opening of my mind and heart. Thank you." Liana Johannaber from GO, Green Opportunities, Asheville, NC.
