Just a Heads Up...

The End of the School Year is Near
While this time of year always seems to greet us with excitement and celebration of our many student accomplishments, we are also focused on finishing strong and ensuring our students are well prepared for the following year.  That means, in addition to daily learning, our calendars are bursting with field trips, parent nights, orientations, and planning days for next year.  I want to thank you all for the great support and partnership we share in making CHMS a truly special middle school experience for your child.

Placement information 2014-2015
We are amidst the process for scheduling students’ classes for the 2014-2015 school year.  While we are not able to honor requests for placement with specific teachers, we are very determined to build the best schedule possible for you child.  If you feel your child has special learning needs that should be considered during the scheduling process to create the best learning environment for him/her, please describe those needs in a letter or e-mail addressed to Mrs. Sherman (jsherman@d181.org) or Mr. Sonntag (gsonntag@d181.org).

Encore Requests for 2014-2015
We will soon send out communication regarding our process for assisting your child to select 7th grade and 8th grade encore (elective) classes for next school year.  As a reminder, incoming 7th and 8th grade students are encouraged to use the parent portal to request their preferred encore classes for the 2014-2015 school year.  (NOTE: incoming 6th grade students do not make encore selections as each child is scheduled into a four-quarter rotation of our exploratory classes:  Middle School Skills, Applied Technology, FCS (Family and Consumer Sciences) and Art—in no particular order).  Prior to this selection process, we will share encore course descriptions so parents and students can spend some time looking over their options before the encore request feature is made available to you.  More information to come soon!

Summer Reading Orders
If you placed an order for summer reading books they will be delivered to your child’s advisory in late May.   If you ordered them for a current 5th grader they will be delivered to your 5th graders home elementary school around the same time.  Thanks to all that ordered as 20% comes back to support the MRC at CHMS!

If you missed the order deadline you can order the books online at Anderson Book Fair’s website (
www.andersons.indiebound.com), click on the tab labeled “School Reading Lists” then CHMS to select your books.  Anderson also offers over 6,000 other titles and CHMS will receive 20% of all online sales YEAR ROUND, so order ALL of your books 24/7/365 from Anderson and please remember to reference CHMS at the checkout.  Spring Book Fair flyer books can also be found on the Anderson website under the title “Spring 2014 Categories”.

Note: Hinsdale Central’s summer reading list for incoming freshman has been added to the CHMS PTO website under the 8th grade tab, as well as the right margin under “School News”.

 Gym Floor Update
Huge thanks to the 180+ CHMS, Monroe, Prospect and Walker families that have already supported the initiative to raise $100,000 for a wood gym floor at CHMS.  We have exceeded our goal of $100,000 with current cash and commitments of approximately $120,000.  The initial bids received in late April were higher than anticipated and we are in the process of having the project rebid.  We are confident that the project will be completed this summer, but will update you on the final bids when they are completed.  This has been an amazing effort by all, but huge thanks to CHMS/Monroe parent Mike Loughlin for leading the effort.

May PTO Meeting
1.  During the PTO meeting on May 14th the 40+ parents in attendance voted to purchase 90 Google Chrome Books and 3 carts (assuming the District pilot is deemed successful at the end of May) for a cost of approximately $32,000.    These Chrome Books will provide the students with greater access to the Internet for research, as well as Google Docs for the Writer’s Workshop initiative.  The Chrome Books will be supported by the D181 technology group and any necessary repairs will be covered by the District budget.

2.  A handout from the meeting – “The Top 20 Things I Wish I Had Known Before My Child Started at HCHS” can be found on the PTO website (www.chmspto.org) under the “Meeting Minutes & Handouts” tab.  Check it out if you missed the meeting and would like a heads up on navigating at HCHS.

3.  Also at this meeting the slate for the 2014/2015 Executive Board was finalized.  Please join us in congratulating our new PTO Board:
