Comments & Opinion
> Caudillo & Maestro
There was, about a quarter of a century ago, a petisero who was indubitably king of the cancha. He was in charge of fifty odd ponies and a half a dozen other petiseros whom he had recruited personally. Now few realised that this petisero was born into a family of players, although he was as good as and sometimes better than many a domadores, and several players. His father was an estanciero, whose love for the game both on the field and on the green beige of the card tables in the casinos of the world, had won much love and lost much lucre. Nevertheless, he and nobody else decided when the team was to play a tournament in Antwerp, Milan, Rome or Sotogrande. There were many six, seven and eight goal players whose careers were decided by him, his choice of ponies, not just at the field but when they were bought and from whom. Indeed, his patron, had such confidence in “his†petisero that the entire budget every year dedicated to the purchase of the new replacements for the string, being a number of hundreds of thousands of dollars, was in his hands. The real team was not the patron but the petisero. The professional polo players came and went, for a season, two or three, or just for a match, but they all knew who was king of the cancha. There was even a time when, this “petisero†ran not only his patron’s place, but was charged nominally with looking after the fields of a major European club. It was not too long before the “petisero†was much more influential than the polo manager. Those who knew and know him will recognise his skills. I can only add that in the days when I was still buying ponies, I would simply call him and a few weeks later a pony or two would arrive, unseen at Luxembourg airport. Very often after a season or so, some five or six goal player would ask if the pony played in the second chukka was for sale, and propose a price of about five times what had been paid. The response was always the same. Friendship is never for sale. I had the honour to know that petiscero, and I can only hope he recognises himself in these few lines. His patron knows and recognises that without him, the team would simply never played…..
