ASP Spring Tips

April showers bring May flowers and the onset of spring, which means it's time for "spring cleaning." ASP Plumbing offers these maintenance tips to protect your home against plumbing problems.

Benefits of a Sump Pump

A sump pump has one sole duty in this world to take excess water away from your home. It may seem silly to pay money for a machine that only performs a simple, single task. But water can be a very dangerous threat to the home.

If you live in a very flat area of the country, a place of low elevation, or a region with a high water table, then you're probably at risk for flooding—there's a reason these places are called floodplains. In fact, after heavy rains, you've probably already undergone or heard of people's experiences with flooded basements. It doesn't take much for water to cause some serious harm; in fact, just a couple inches of standing water can create thousands of dollars in damage. So in order to avoid a swamped sub level, the best way to prevent the deluge is an investment in a quality sump pump.

A sump is simply a well that looks like a small pit in your sub-floor where water collects. But if this pit becomes full, you have two problems: the well may overflow into your basement, but more likely the problem is the tile around your house is just sitting full of water. And with this tile being located right next to your foundation, water may eventually seep into your basement through cracks and fissures. This is where the sump pump comes in. When water in your sump reaches a critical level, this machine will force the liquid out through a pipe that leads away from your foundation and into the city storm drain.

Spring Cleaning Tips

What to look for when spring cleaning your home this season.

For Kitchens and Bathrooms:

  • Check faucets for drips or leaks. Make repairs to save water.
  • Ensure that all drains have strainers to prevent hair, soap and debris from clogging the drain lines.
  • Check toilets for hidden leaks. Add six drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If the toilet is leaking, color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes.
  • Make sure toilets flush properly. If the handle must be held down for a thorough flush or jiggled to stop the water from running you may need to replace worn tank parts. They're inexpensive and you'll notice a lower water bill.
  • Exercise water supply valves under sinks and toilets to prevent them from sticking.

For Appliances:

  • Check the temperature setting on the water heater. It should be set no higher than 120°F to prevent scalding and reduce energy use.
  • Carefully drain several gallons from the water heater tank to flush out corrosion causing sediment, which reduces heating efficiency and shortens the life of the heater. Check your water heater manufacturer 's website for specific instructions concerning your make and model.
  • Consider replacing a water heater more than 15 years old. (The first four numbers of the serial number represent the month and year it was made.) Newer water heaters are more energy efficient.
  • Make sure flammables are not stored near the water heater or furnace.
  • Check dishwasher, washing machine and ice maker supply hoses for bulges or leaks. Replace hoses showing signs of weakness or older than ten years. Use stainless steel hoses wherever possible. They are more reliable and less prone to bursting than other types.

For Outside:

  • Make sure yard drains, gutters and downspouts are cleaned out, open, and free of debris.
  • Check for bird nests in plumbing vent pipes.
  • Check faucets and hose bibs to make sure water flows freely. If an outdoor faucet drips or if there is leakage inside your home the first time the hose is turned on, you may have had a frozen pipe that cracked and needs to be replaced.

Did you know?

  • A 2,000 year old toilet with running water was discovered in the tomb of a former Chinese Emperor. It even had a stone seat and an armrest!
  • The word plumber is derived from the Latin word for lead, “plumbus”, which was the material used to create pipe systems in Roman towns and cites, before it was discovered to be poisonous!
  • Just a little increase in water heat can lead to some really serious consequences. At 120° F, it will take 10 minutes to burn skin, but at 140° F it will take just six seconds.
