Welcome to the May Newsletter 2014

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents,

We are fast approaching June and as I write this introduction, I am very aware of the number of school events in the school calendar in next few weeks. It will be a very busy end of term.

It was great seeing you all at the May Fair at Soto on Saturday 24th May. It was my first May Fair and I am very pleased and proud to be part of King’s Group!

We are planning changes to our extra-curricular provision and hope that our pupils will enjoy the exciting range of new clubs that will be on offer next year. Please encourage your child to try out the Lego Robotics Taster session on Monday June 2nd from 4:30-6:00pm.

Last week we welcomed our colleagues from Colegio Brains to our school and had the opportunity to visit them in the morning. We believe there are many areas where there are opportunities for collaboration between our schools and teachers. It is good to have strong links in our local community and we hope to participate in a range of events in the new school year.

We have been discussing opportunities to collaborate with Retamares Golf Club and have decided to begin this partnership with the first Retamares King’s College School Golf and Sports Open Day on June 21st at 1pm. This is a family event and we look forward to seeing you all there. Read more about our plans for introducing our pupils to golf in the article in the newsletter.

Regards,

Dawn Akyurek
Headteacher

May Fair

Once again, the weather gods smiled upon Soto for the annual May Fair and a glorious day was enjoyed by huge numbers of parents, pupils, past pupils and staff.  There seemed to be more stalls and eateries than ever before, and the quality of the music (not least the female staff band) was on a whole new level. Most importantly of all, of course, people spent their money in aid of the four House children’s charities: Juegaterapia, Remar, Nyumbani and Asion.

An eye-watering 32,000 Euros was raised on the day and after covering all expenses we are hoping to clear in excess of 25,000 to send on to the children in need. A huge thank you to all of those involved, whether you were manning a stall, donating gifts, spending your money or cheering others on. I know of no other school in Spain that manages to be so generous in spirit and so mindful of other’s needs. A day to be proud.

Music in May

The month of May was welcomed in a most musical way by four concerts given by the Music School. The Music School has grown a lot over the last few years with a total of just over 100 students learning an instrument from Music Initiation in Reception through to Year 9 students studying piano, flute and guitar.

All of the Music School students were given the opportunity to perform in these four concerts which took place on the afternoons of 5th, 8th, 13th and 14th May in the school hall.

The concerts were a great success with warm applause from parents and teachers alike who enjoyed music ranging from the Baroque through to Twentieth Century music including jazz and pop.

The level of performances was particularly high with students showing off their musical talents confidently. A variety of instruments were heard including: piano, violin, guitar, saxophone and flute along with a group of students from Music Initiation.

King's College Yearbook

Every year King’s College release a Yearbook to remember all of the exciting events and achievements of the pupils during the academic year. In ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-14 you would have received two Yearbooks; 2011-12 and later 2012-13. The 2012-13 book was delivered free of charge, as we worked hard to try to “catch up” with these books.

For the 2013-14 Yearbook, those parents who have not “opted out” to receive the Yearbook, will be charged a revised fee of 17€ on the September 2014 school fees.

We are hoping to be able to complete and distribute 2013-14 Yearbooks on the final day of term in June, dependent on print time frames.

For Each year moving forward, you will be asked in February of that academic year whether or not you wish to receive the yearbook. If you do not “opt out”, the fee for the book will be charged on your April invoice.

If you have any questions please contact the school reception.

Lettuce Planting

At the end of April, every pupil at La Moraleja had the opportunity to plant a lettuce to take home, in order to watch them grow and to care for them - and contribute to making the biggest salad in Madrid.

The event was organised by Mrs. Harper who arranged it through the garden centre Fronda, which provided all the plants. Natalia S from Year 9 said "our school is becoming green", and Iciar P, also from Year 9, added that "it was a great experience". On top of planting the lettuce, the children were also introduced to and shown different types of lettuces.

The Year 9 students were also given the opportunity to plant other vegetables, such as tomatoes, so that they could make a salad. "I think it is fun to see how we are responsible for something of our own. Maybe next week, I will be able to eat it" said Jaime N.
Marc C was also very excited about the lettuces pointing out that "the plants grow very fast, the tomatoes are already yellow, and they will soon be red. I cannot wait to make a salad."

"It was a fantastic experience and we all had fun. The growing is going well  and my plant is almost twenty centimeters tall." Jorge P Year 9.

Hannah M from Year 9 pointed out that "it was very interesting being shown the different types of lettuces and I personally cannot wait to see it all finished."

Football

By Jose R (Captain Cook)

On Tuesday 29th of April, KCS played a friendly match between one of our neighbouring schools Ibn Gabirol, their team the Macabees played against our youngest football team, the Pre-Benjamin.

Our team consists of 10 football players of different ages. Their names are:
  1. Nicolás V. Y1
  2. Marcos A. Y2
  3. Tyler B. Y2
  4. Parsa F. Y2
  5. Hector A. Y3
  6. Javier Ch. Y3
  7. Daniel C. Y3
  8. .Jacobo I. Y3
  9. Jorge P. Y3
  10. Martin S. Y3
We also counted on the aid of players like Mateo A. Y3, Nicolás L. Y2, Deyi. Y3 and Enrique. Y1 and they were happy to play with their friends.

Since the beginning of the season we have seen a huge improvement in their football skills and in their sportsmanship and teamwork.

For their outstanding performance and attitude during the year we decided to arrange a few friendly matches as a treat for them.

This first match against the Macabees was brilliant. Our team showed really good football skills and they played a fantastic match scoring many goals. We are really proud of our team.

The score was King's College 9 – 8 Macabees. We hope that the next matches will be just as good as this last one.

Volvo Design Competition

By Lola Oñoro, Head of Spanish Studies

Students in Year 6 took part in a creative workshop sponsored by Volvo Car España. They were given the chance to build, design and develop a vehicle which is able to avoid accidents.

During this process, students were given an experience of programming and operating robots.

The students showed excellent problem solving skills and impressed everyone with their teamwork and attitude. They came up with some great designs.

Year 6 all enjoyed the experience and this is something we would like to repeat in the future.

Click Here to see all the year 6 Volvo projects

Please go into the link and VOTE for your favourite project. We are competing against a variety of schools all over Madrid. We are also trying to convince the judges by using our creativity in these projects to win a trip to Barcelona where Volvo's central offices are.

Word from a Student Teacher

“These last 14 weeks as a student teacher in KCS La Moraleja have been a wonderful experience for both my professional and personal development.

I have learnt lots of things about teaching and especially the English language; in fact I feel like I have been abroad these last four months.

I feel incredibly lucky having chosen to work with the school.  English is a global language used for communication not only in education, but business too.  Having the language at your disposal is a great tool to avoid any kind of communication barrier.”

Cristina Latorre,
Student Teacher in Year 1.

Year 4 Trip to Piedraleves

On Monday 19th May 2014, forty very excited and slightly nervous Year 4 children and two well-prepared teachers, left King’s College School, La Moraleja and headed to Piedraleves, Ávila for four action-packed days of activities.

The theme of the week was "Explorers, Aztecs and Incas" and the children were split into two groups called: Magallanes and Elcano.

Activities ranged from arts & crafts such as making a natural collage, murals and clay models to mime, acting and dancing and playing games like Frisbee and Blind man’s Buff.

Each day was rounded off by a group assembly where the children shared what they had been doing during the day and got the chance to write a diary of the day’s activities.

Team-work, self-confidence and independence were encouraged throughout the trip and we feel the children rose well to every challenge faced.

UK Maths Challenge

Well done to all of our Year 8 pupils who did brilliantly in the UK maths Challenge especially those who achieved Bronze and  Silver  certificates, a special message of congratulations for Augustine C who achieved the highest score in Year 8.

Billy No Buzz

The children in Nursery and Reception Class really enjoyed their Spring drama performance, 'Billy No Buzz'. (by Niki Davies)

The story was about a bee who did not have a buzz and how he found ways to make friends. The children learnt the songs and enjoyed performing on the stage for their parents.

The fantastic costumes were provided by our parents and included sparkling head dresses. The children talked about the play and Adriana from Reception Class who was the Queen Bee said, “I Like dancing to the music” Mateo also from Reception Class who was a worker bee told his teacher, “I liked saying Buzz, buzz, buzz buzz off”.

Brazil Day

By Francesco and Fernando (5S)

Brazil day was a very fun day, we all enjoyed it, it was amazing because…

On the day we could come in Brazilian clothes and most of the year 5 pupils came with a Brazilian uniform. We started with Maths, learning about Brazilian money (Real) and with Mr Pike we printed the groups in the world, put the goals and then added them and saw who won.

After break time we went to the Library and ate Brazilian food called 'pay de queso' and drank a delicious typical Brazilian drink.

Lukas’ mum came and told us about what Brazil was like. She told us that in the past the black people were slaves and 80% of Brazilian people are black. She told us that the Olympics were going to be held there in 2016 and most of the stadiums were still not finished yet.

Later that day, before lunch, we went to the hall and learned the Samba. Luckily Norah from our class (5S) won. We took part in a dance off and the girls won. After lunch we made a head dress, a head dress is a famous Brazilian hat - it came out perfectly.

We also made some fact files about Brazil. Some people used Brazilian stickers of players like Pele. At the end of the day we reviewed our classmates fact files and all of them were amazing.

During our last break time of the day, we challenged Year 3 and 4 to a match. We were called the Brazilian fighters and we won the match 5 – 3.

Send My Friend To School

By Alex and Andres – 5S

Send all my friends to school is a worldwide campaign that reminds world leaders of the promise they made in the year 2000. This promise was to send all children to school by the year 2015.

In the year 2000 there were 114 million children not going to school. Great things have been achieved since then though and now there are only 57 million children who do not attend school.

However, even though the number of children has been halved since the year 2000, it is important that we focus on being able to send all of the remaining children to school.

This year the campaign has been focusing on people with disabilities and has been trying to raise money for children with disabilities to go to school and to have all the resources they need to learn. Lots of schools are taking part and our school is one of them.

Class 5S decided to present their assembly to the whole of Lower School, pupils and teachers, in order to spread information about the event.

We convinced the whole of Lower School to make buddies to be sent to the Prime Minister. The show was very cool; everyone took part in this assembly and had something to say. People explained to the public in this assembly how important it was to go to school and how we must help children less fortunate to be able to go to school.

We also did a play of the meeting of the world leaders in the United Nations in New York in the year 2000. People displayed their buddies in the show. The buddies were fabulously made and we all had lots of fun.
