Team Wales to Thailand

A team of four students from Wales are preparing for the World Schools Debating Championships in Thailand in August.

Euan McGivern (Coleg Cambria, Wrexham), Dafydd Foster-Davies (Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd, Maesteg), Rhys Steele (Bishop of Llandaff High School, Cardiff) and Ciara Berry (Radyr Comprehensive School, Cardiff) will fly to Bangkok to compete against the best debaters from across the world.

To qualify for the competition, students participated in the Wales Schools Debating Championships and then a selection weekend, before being chosen for the Team Wales squad.

The next Wales Schools Debating Championships, taking place this autumn, is now open for registrations. Find out more and register here.

The WCIA is monitoring the emerging situation in Thailand and working with parents and organisers to ensure the safety of the students.

Get involved in UNA

There are plenty of ways you can get involved in UNA over the next few months.

The 21st of May is World Day for Cultural Diversity and Development and the 29th of May is the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.  We're planning some Tweets and Facebook messages to promote awareness of these days and UNA, but would love your ideas as to how social media can be used to spread the word. Email us your ideas.

The UNA-UK Atrocity Prevention campaign, as well as other campaigns across Wales are listed on our website to make it easier for you to get involved in the issues that matter to you.

In other news, the UNA Wales Free and Equal Event planned for November with Peter Tatchell and Stonewall Cymru planning is progressing and dates will be confirmed soon.

Just ahead of Refugee Week (16 – 22 June), Cardiff UNA Branch are holding an event on the current state of Syria. UNA Wales Intern, Hazel McDonald, said: "Refugee Week is a good opportunity for people and organisations in Wales to arrange something in their neck of the woods to raise awareness, especially with the plight of Syrian refugees so prominent."

WCIA now a charitable incorporated organisation

The Welsh Centre for International Affairs was transferred to a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) on May the 1st, 2014.

CIOs are new legal entities created by the Charity Commission similar to a limited company, but only available to charities. The new charity number for the WCIA is 1156822 (previously 259701). Details about the CIO can are on the Charity Commission website

Trustees decided to make the change as a CIO is a more suitable legal entity for the growing charity.

Thank you to Geldards LLP who kindly donated their time pro bono to complete the transfer.

Joining CEWC

CEWC membership is available for less than 10p per student for the next academic year.

Whether it's the Wales Schools Debating Championships, Philosophy for Children teacher training or Model United Nations, CEWC activities give students opportunities to build confidence, critical and creative thinking and communication skills, while enabling teachers to deliver key skills in the Literacy and Numeracy Framework and Skills Framework, and core themes of ESDGC, the Welsh Baccalaureate and PSE.

Membership will give you discounts at all these activities. Find out more and join.

Lights off for earth hour

Wales joined 162 countries to turn off their lights for WWF's earth hour last month.

The Senedd, Caernarfon Castle and 235 Welsh schools joined landmarks like the Empire State Building and Sydney Harbour Bridge in going dark.

Earth Hour is a symbolic celebration of the planet and an opportunity for people to reflect on the things they can do to create a brighter future.
