May Update – Local and European flavour

Hello all -

It feels like there's a bit of an undercurrent this month. As we’ve emerged from squalls into this week’s sunshine, LCA’s predictions are out for the May 22nd local elections… we've helped deliver UCL events tied to local and EU carbon deadlines... and we're preparing a June 17th Southbank field trip and City Hall seminar for local and Dutch urbanists. Given that I'll be watching the elections from across the Channel, I'm pretty comfortable with all this.

On a slightly more serious note, have a look at our Programme Highlights below: there's been lots going on, including the successful launch of our Crossrail as Catalyst report, seminars and field trips. There's a variety of interesting events coming up too, like the Grow up or Grow out? debate at City Hall on June 11th.

Finally, we'd like to extend a warm welcome and thank-you to new Future London Leaders sponsor Re, and to new member LB Sutton! We want our acclaimed FLL and Leaders Plus career development programmes to improve and grow steadily, and will take on a small number of sponsors over the next year to do that. If you'd like to find out more about getting involved or joining FoL, please get in touch.

Thanks and see you out there,

Lisa Taylor
Director

Programme Highlights

London 2050 - Grow up or grow out?

London 2050 - Grow up or grow out?
With the Infrastructure Investment Plan nearing completion, Future of London offers a brief pause to consider the practical aspects of London’s rapid growth. Do we densify? Or do we make a decisive push through the Green Belt and GLA borders? Our June 11th event will debate these options. For information on speakers and how to register, see our website.

Report launch: Crossrail as Catalyst

Crossrail as Catalyst
Our Crossrail as Catalyst report launched on April 23rd, examining how London’s communities can grasp the regeneration potential of Crossrail stations. Supported by Crossrail, Arup, GVA, and London Communications Agency, the report recommends both actions for Crossrail 1 and broader principles to inform future schemes. The full report and a summary of the launch are on our website.

Communities in Transition

Westway
Our Woodberry Down field trip as part of Green Sky Thinking week was a great success (see our report here); our next trip will be on May 29th with FoL member Westway Trust, looking at "building community in difficult places" – we will visit innovative uses of land under the A40 trunk road through North Kensington. A limited number of spaces are still available – see our website for details.

Delivering Public Health seminars

Breakfast Seminar
Our public health seminar series continued on May 15th with Poverty, inequality and health, when a strong panel and engaged audience made for a great session – watch for a write-up. Our Food and health: Cross-sector resources seminar was postponed due to the Tube strike; it will now take place on June 5th. Please email events@futureoflondon.org.uk to register your interest.
