The Support Call from Microsoft... NOT!

The Support Call from Microsoft... NOT!

May 13, 2014   by Jon Kamm
I just got a support call from Microsoft regarding my computer (of course I knew this was the scam I had heard about). Here is how it went...

They first had me start the Event viewer from the Run Line (eventvwr) and showed that my windows event logs had over 13,000 administrative events and that these errors that were caused by hackers. -- In reality I know there are always thousands of errors reported in that log and they will stay there until I delete them.
Then they had me start the Certificate Manager (certmgr.msc) and look at the Trusted Root Certificates -- specifically the expired Authenticode Certificate from Microsoft -- they explained to me that my authenticode from Microsoft had expired (in 1999) and that was how the hackers were getting into my computer. -- I happen to know, that it is not a problem if a certificate is expired as long as a certificate hasn't been revoked -- not to mention it had nothing to do with how a hacker could get into my comptuer.
Next he had me open www.support.me for starting a Logmein support session. I typed in the 6 digit authorization code and clicked on connect to technician. (I'm safe doing this until I am prompted to allow access) The next screen was a warning from Logmein about taking unsolicited calls for support and only to accept them from people you trust. He told me that this was a message from his technician and that I should click on continue... I said... okay, sure I will click on Report Abuse... he said... no, no, no, click on Continue... I said... okay... I will click on Report Abuse... cause you are a sleeze ball! -- Nothing but dial tone.

So there you go. that is what that is all about! If in doubt give me a call happy to save anyone from this complete waste of time!
