Summer Sign Language Learning and Practice

Close up of interpreter's hands in an open gesture.Summer Signs is a great short video for beginners wanting to learn a few basic signs for summer such as “vacation,” “water,” “swim,” and “hot.” Anyone wanting to learn more should Meet the Bravo Family, who teach you the typical signs for a morning routine, and then are ready to teach you much more in the award winning Beginning ASL Videocourse of 16 videos.

Interpreters and interpreters-in-training can use hot summer days to brush up signing skills by learning from DCMP’s Educational Interpreting Series (12 videos), featuring two certified interpreters providing model interpretations. Also, Signs of Development Interpreter Interactive Workshops invite interpreters to choose from 86 interactive workshops to earn Continuing Education Units (CEU). Or, others may choose to view IDEA and the IEP (2 CDs), for which CEUs can also be acquired, and which focus on interpreting in the K-12 setting and explain the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Teachers who return from their summer beach trip invigorated to plan for the coming year may utilize Vocabulary Builders in Sign Language (6 videos), which introduce sign vocabulary that is specific to Computers, Math, English, Science, Psychology, and American History/Government. Or, perhaps Signing Fiesta (7 videos) will be appealing, as it is a set of instructional videos that teach basic sign language through Spanish and English, geared toward Latino parents of deaf children who use American Sign Language or Signed English, and presented in bilingual format.

There is so much more for everyone! Browse our catalog under Sign Language and be introduced to over 200 titles in the Sign Language section of the DCMP media library.

Sizzling Summer Media

Cartoon drawing of the sun wearing sunglasses, smiling and giving the thumbs up sign.A trifecta of special days offer unique learning opportunities this month. On Friday the 13th have some fun with DCMP’s Customs and Superstitions (Grades 6-8) which answers questions children ask such as: Why do we have Christmas Trees? How did Halloween originate? Why do men raise their hats to ladies? How did superstitions begin? Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky? Then, on Saturday the 14th (Flag Day), America’s Symbols (Grades K-6) follows Erin as she visits Philadelphia, learns about the Liberty Bell, and then researches other symbols that represent aspects of America’s history, values, and beliefs (the bald eagle, Uncle Sam, The White House, and more). Finally, you’ll win the trifecta on Sunday the 15th (Father’s Day) by learning about the lifetime commitment of being a father by watching Fathering: What It Means to Be a Dad (Grades 9-12) or by experiencing the story of a turn-of-the-century farm boy who can’t seem to communicate with his father in John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony (Grades 4-8).
