Choose animal welfare friendly EU election candidates

As part of its #vote4animals campaign Eurogroup for Animals launched a brand new tool designed to help European citizens choose who they vote for in the upcoming elections. The tool also allows candidates standing for election to add a profile and show their commitment to animal welfare.

Our election campaign has already seen over 200 candidates signing our animal welfare pledge and we are now giving Europe’s citizens the chance to find out who has supported us and who hasn’t and to use that information to help them decide who to vote for.

The MEP selector tool is hosted on www.voteforanimals.eu which also provides information on our campaign including our animal welfare manifesto, pledge and information about the European Elections.

EU Commissioner and Candidate MEP signs pledge!

Neven Mimica, the EU Commissioner for Consumer Policy and currently a Croatian candidate for the European Parliament has signed the Eurogroup Pledge for animal welfare.

We welcome his signature and hope that he will be elected and that we can work with him on promoting alternatives to animal testing in the next Parliament session!

#vote4animals campaign gathers pace in Sweden

Member Djurens Rätt (Animal Rights Sweden) has been involved in our campaign Vote for Animals since its launch.

The main focus has been asking MEP candidates to sign the pledge, by email and during meetings with candidates in Brussels and in Sweden. Social media, Twitter in particular, was used both to remind candidates to sign and to thank them afterwards. There has been an increasing interest from the candidates closer to the elections, so the last few weeks have been busy.

A few weeks before the 25 May an elections website http://www.djurensratt.se/euval2014 was launched where information about which candidates signed the pledge is presented, and the performance of the current MEPs in animal welfare issues reviewed.

On 14 May a debate was organized in Stockholm together with Animal Protection Sweden and WSPA Sweden. Current European Parliament parties were represented and topics discussed included an EU Animal Welfare framework law, transport of live animals, labeling of animal derived products, and the implementation of current legislation.

Finally on 16 May, Djurens Rätt and Eurogroup's Directors published an op-ed, with a particular focus on long distance animal transport, in one of Sweden's leading news website. For more details, click here [Swedish] or here [English]
