6) IT on PEI Online Survey

Digital economy enterprises employers and IT professional are being asked to complete an online survey about their industry on PEI. This survey is being conducted on behalf of Innovation and Technology Association of Prince Edward Island (ITAP). The results of this survey will be part of a needs assessment for ITAP, in order to determine challenges and find solutions to recruitment, retention and advancement of IT professionals on PEI.

In 2011, HRSCD economists had IT analysts/consultants and computer programmers as some of the occupations which are facing high labour market demand pressures on PEI. “Being an IT company on a small island has the benefits of lower start-up costs, but it also has specific difficulties to recruitment and retention of experienced IT professionals. We are looking to create our own Island-made solution to these challenges,” says Mike Gillis, Executive Director of ITAP.

The online survey can be found at http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/nishka/wit-employer-industry-survey/ and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. The survey will close on May 31st. For further information, please contact: Catherine Ronahan at 368-5040 or cathy@wnpei.org

7) Just Announced: ASI Early Bird Registration Extended!

The Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities has extended its early bird deadline to encourage even more participants to save $50 on event registration. The new deadline is June 16. To register, visit: www.asi-iea.ca/en/asi-2014/

The Atlantic Summer Institute is a four-day conference and learning Institute, taking place August 19-22. The ASI aims to strengthen communities by encouraging meaningful dialogue and collaboration across sectors, while also focusing on intergenerational leadership and mentorship. This year’s theme, “Renewing Democracy through Social Justice: Adding New Voices” will resonate with emerging and established leaders as well as those committed to social justice in Atlantic communities. With a program designed to encourage dialogue about the evolution of democracy and social justice in Canada, ASI 2014 will serve as a forum for the voices of those historically under-represented in democratic institutions in Canada, including women, Aboriginal peoples, Francophones, immigrants, LGBTQ communities, and young people.

ASI 2014 features two specialized curriculum workshops: “Gender, Diversity and Community Leadership” and “Building and Using Evidence for Social Justice”. In addition to the workshops, ASI 2014 will feature a prominent keynote speaker, a storytelling circle on advocacy for social justice, a social circus and much more!

ASI appeals to those working across sectors, including education, community development, and all levels of government, in addition to students and young people committed to community leadership and social justice. Participants learn valuable skills and share knowledge, and are able to return to their communities, workplaces and organizations with new tools and ideas to address issues and initiate change.

A limited number of subsidies are available for participants to help cover costs of attending the ASI. Apply for a subsidy online by June 10. To register and learn more about ASI 2014 visit: www.asi-iea.ca or email: info@asi-iea.ca

9) Queen Street Commons Is Accepting New Members

Co-working at the Queen Street Commons
The Commons is a simple idea: Bring interesting people together to share space, services, and costs. The Queen Street Commons is set up with private workspaces, common rooms, bookable meeting rooms, a kitchen, and an eating area. It is a place for individuals and groups to work, meet, and host professional gatherings. Services include wireless internet, printer, fax, phone, mail delivery, projector, secured access, lockers, and boardroom.

The Commons is a co-operative working environment. The co-working community at the Commons is a collection of freelancers, artisans, counsellors, entrepreneurs, authors, and other independent workers who have come together to create a professional environment to conduct their business.

Joining the commons is simple. A 6-month membership costs just $150 per month, or about the same as securing a PO Box. If you are travelling to PEI or if you just need space for a short while to catch up with your work, you can drop in for $50/day or join for a single month for $300.

10) Calling all Community Changers and Promising Green Thumbs

This summer Women's Network PEI (WNPEI) will be planting a garden at the new Legacy Garden site at the PEI Farm Centre. We are looking for a few more women to help us plant, tend, harvest, and share in the results of our labour. For this project we are primarily looking for women with lived experience of poverty, who would not otherwise have access to growing their own garden. We think that this will be a great opportunity to get outside, meet new friends, and learn more about how you can fight food insecurity in PEI. You will be joining a great group of women who are committed to making positive changes in their own lives, and in their community. For more information call 368-5040 and ask for Richelle, or email richelle@wnpei.org.
