Architect, TED Talk presenter Chris Downey visits today

Chris Downey is an architect who lost his sight and gained a new way of seeing the world. Join in a special free lecture from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Linus Pauling Science Center (room 125).

Learn about accessible design and how it affects you! “Chris Downey is an architect, planner, and consultant. Working with design teams and clients, he draws on his unique perspective as a seasoned architect without sight, helping to realize environments that offer not only greater physical accessibility, but also a dimension of delight in architecture experienced through other senses.”

This event has been sponsored by 10 campus organizations: Associated Students of OSU, Office of Equity and Inclusion, Disability Access Services, Inter Fraternity Council, Office of the VP of Finance and Administration, Office of the VP of Student Affairs, Recreational Sports, University Housing and Dining Services, Panhellenic Council and the Student Incidental Fee Committee.

Move-Out Donation Drive coming soon

Did you know that residents donated rather than discarded 26,000 pounds of reusable stuff while moving out of the halls last year?

Many residents find that they have more stuff in their room than can fit in their car ride home. And making decisions on what to keep and what to donate is hard when you’re taking final exams and moving out!

Here are some tips on what you can do now:

  1. If you visit home before the end of the year, bring some of your belongings home with you then.
  2. Eat the food you have before buying more.
  3. Donate unwanted clothing in the labeled bin in your laundry room.
  4. Assess what have in your room and consider what you want to donate rather than take home – it’s easier to do now than later!

You will have a chance to donate in about one month – in late May, donation bins will be placed in your hall’s lobby, and you will receive a move-out kit on your door that includes bags for sorting.

Reminder: UHDS dining plans end this term

Remember that residence hall UHDS dining plan balances are removed at the end of Spring Term – they do not carry over to the next term.  Whatever is left on the plan will be removed on June 16.

Now is the time to be aware of your remaining dining plan balances. If your current balance is more than you can use by the end of the term, please consider changing to a lower dining plan now before your balance is too low to allow the change.  Dining plan changes cannot be requested after June 6.

Minimum balances required to lower your dining plan:
  • From Ultimate to Premium: $218
  • From Ultimate to Preferred: $457
  • From Ultimate to Basic: $696
  • From Premium to Preferred: $239
  • From Premium to Basic: $478
  • From Preferred to Basic: $239
If you are running low on UHDS dining dollars, you can choose to add money to your Orange Rewards plan; Orange Rewards balances DO carry over as long as you are an OSU student.  Orange Rewards dollars are accepted in all campus dining locations.  Simply log in to MyCard site and add whatever amount you need to get you through the rest of the term. Good luck with the rest of the term!

Orange Rewards don’t disappear!

Are you returning to OSU next year?  If you will continue to be an OSU student next year, even if you are living off-campus, your Orange Rewards dining plan will still be active.  So don’t worry about trying to use up your Orange Rewards balance before the end of Spring Term.  Save it to use during Summer Session or next Fall Term when you return to campus!

Construction update: 15th Street closure

The Washington Way Realignment and 15th Street Improvements Project, one of several active construction projects on campus, is running ahead of schedule.

Please read this update on the project-related closures and detour information affecting east and south side residents. VIEW MAP.

15th Street Closure: Since May 5, 15th Street is closed between Washington Way and Jefferson Way.  A detour to 11th Street is in place.  The closure and detour for through- traffic will be in place through August. Alternate routes to Oregon State, area businesses and residences will be in place.

Kerr South Crosswalk Closure: Due to safety concerns, the Kerr south crosswalk will until work is complete in this area.  A temporary crossing will be established once there is less heavy construction and truck traffic in the area. During this time, use Jefferson Way crosswalk to cross between the east side residence halls and Kerr Administration Building.  Signage will be in place to help direct pedestrians.

Benton Place Closure: Benton Place is closed, so that a trench that was created for waterline installation can be utilized. Crews are working to establish a water line reconnection to Washington Way as soon as possible.  This impacts entrance to Benton place, 17th Street, and Goss Stadium parking lots

Adams and Washington Avenue Crossing: Pedestrian crossings will remain closed at Adams and Washington Avenue as well as all sidewalks on 15th street. For safety, pedestrians are asked to cross at Jefferson Way.

Vehicle Detour:  All drivers are asked to avoid construction by taking the main detour, using 11th street to get around this closure and through campus.

Thank you for your patience and support of these improvement projects for campus. For more information on this and other notifications, visit Campus Closures and Shutdown Notices.

Submit construction-related questions or feedback.

Marijuana policy expert to give McCall leture

Mason Tvert, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project – and a leader of the campaign to legalize marijuana in Colorado – will deliver the annual Gov. Tom McCall Memorial Lecture at Oregon State University on Tuesday, May 13.

In his lecture, “The Road to Legal Marijuana in America,” Tvert will share insights on the past, present and future of marijuana policy in the United States.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Construction and Engineering Hall in the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 S.W. 26th St. The lecture is free and open to the public. It is presented by the OSU College of Liberal Arts and the School of Public Policy.

As director of communications, Tvert oversees the Marijuana Policy Project’s media strategy and online outreach efforts out of the organization's Denver office. Before joining the lobbying organization, he co-directed the successful campaign in support of Amendment 64, the 2012 ballot initiative to regulate marijuana like alcohol in Colorado.

Previously, Tvert co-founded and directed Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation, a Colorado-based nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about the relative safety of marijuana compared to alcohol. He is a member of the SAFER board of directors and a member of the advisory board for Marijuana Majority.

The OSU lectureship is named after Tom McCall, who was Oregon’s governor from 1967-75. Past lecturers have included several Oregon governors; Washington Post columnists David Broder and William Raspberry; political analyst Floyd McKay; Dennis Dimick of National Geographic magazine; and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Fairbanks Gallery at OSU to exhibit Royal Nebeker

“Dreams & Memories,” an exhibit of prints and monoprints by artist Royal Nebeker is up in the Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University.

The gallery is located in Fairbanks Hall, 220 S.W. 26th St., Corvallis. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and the gallery is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through May 28.

As an artist, Nebeker creates personalized narratives based on dreams and memories, often embellished with words and notations that help tell the story. Some of his works are based on personal events, others on literature. Through powerful and enigmatic imagery, Nebeker paints what arts historian Stephen C. McGough has called a reflective journey of the artist's life, exploring such universal themes as hope, fear, joy, anguish, sexuality, spirituality, power, vulnerability and the dynamics of personal relationships.

Throughout his career, Nebeker has focused on the human figure. His work is strongly influenced by  Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, the German Expressionists, Vienna Secessionist artists Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and others.

A prolific painter and printmaker, he has been featured in countless solo and group exhibitions over the past four decades and his work is included in public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Nebeker studied in California at the Claremont College and Otis Art Institute, earned a master of fine arts degree from Brigham Young University in 1970 and completed a post graduate degree from the National School of Fine Arts in Oslo in 1972.
