April Highlights
 
  • The new FoG Electrical Installation & Maintenance Unit funded by the Elizabeth & Nicholas Nainani Foundation was declared open by chief guest Sapan Nainani.
  • Further sponsorships by the Elizabeth & Nicholas Nainani Foundation include: Lahiru Pre-school, Community Psycho-social Unit Training, Akurala Child Resilience Building Centre construction, furnishing of the Electrical Installation & Maintenance Unit and self-defense training for vulnerable women & children.
  • The team of ladies who participated in the Enactus RHUL social entrepreneurship workshop entered their final product (Jack Fruit Chutney) for an international competition.
  • The Foundation of Goodness conducted an eye clinic with the help of Dr. Selvil and eye technician Sujani to benefit 110 patients, with 30 of them receiving spectacles.
  • The FoG’s 40th consecutive visit to the North involved donating bikes, books and stationery as well as conducting sports training camps. We are pleased to inform that these uninterrupted visits have impacted the lives of 15,200 beneficiaries to date. Find out more details through the North Journey So Far.
  • Documents to determine the valuation for the North Land have been forwarded to the Regional Office in Kurunegala and awaits dispatch to the Jaffna Valuation department. Next, they will be sent to the Mullaitivu Divisional Secretariat for finalization of the payment.
  • 23 members of The Unity Mission Trust (UMT) visited the MCC Centre of Excellence in Seenigama for a Leadership Programme, and to gain insight about the holistic rural community model.
  • The best performers for 2013 from the FoG Empowerment Sectors underwent a special leadership programme with the Full Life coaching team made up of Rozaine and Pujitha.
  • Encouraged by The Cartwheel Initiative, the FoG stop-motion animation students submitted a short animated film for the Adobe Youth Voices Awards.
  • The FoG traditional dance classes performed a dance recital after completing the first level of training, and plans are underway to form a goodness dance troupe for sustainable income generation.
  • The Colombo Operated Model United Nations (COMUN) held a stationery drive for charity and all of the items collected from this event was donated to FoG to be distributed among rural students.
  • Mandira Charuni and Ureshika Maduwanthi from the FoG Sports Academy were selected for the National U19 Netball Tour of Australia and Malaysia respectively.
  • New gym equipment from Nordic Lanka were donated to the FoG Sports Academy Gym by Nihal Samarasinghe.
  • Community Aid Sports Tours to the Foundation’s Sports Academy in Seenigama during the month of April included visits by 14 schools; Rostrover College - Australia, Redhill School - South Africa, Lord Wandsworth College - UK, Rokeby College - UK, Royal College Old Boys' Team - Australia, Warwick School - UK, Australian Academy - Victoria, St. Benedict’s College, Ealing - UK, Bromsgrove College - UK, St. George College - UK, St. John’s Prep - UK and Stowe College - UK.
  • 50 scholarships were presented by the LBW Trust for the second time, with plans for a third batch of sponsorships now underway. 
  • Essential medicines were donated to the FoG Medical Centre by Dr. & Mrs. Sarath Seneviratne to be distributed among rural patients.
  • FoG supporter Pradeep Karunagaran and his two young daughters were joined by the Rathgama Children’s Goodness Club in painting classrooms at the Sri Wimalabuddhi Maha Vidyalaya in Seenigama.
  • Sector beneficiaries continue to provide community aid relief to elevate the standards of rural communities in an effort to give back the kindness they receive through their access to the free FoG courses.
  • The Lahiru Pre-school observed Traditional Sinhala/ Tamil New Year Customs in the month of April, instilling cultural values at an early age.
  • 40 Village Welfare projects amounting to Rs.476,678/- were conducted to uplift the living standards of rural villagers. 
  • The FoG is delighted to have two overseas volunteers from USA and Czech Republic with us this month, adding value to our work.
 
FoG's ongoing programmes have benefited 3,414 beneficiaries from the South and North during this month, towards improving their quality of life.

Sector Spotlight: 

The Foundation of Goodness prioritizes access to computers underpinned by high quality training for rural communities, through our own dedicated and well equipped Computer Training Centre. We also assist schools to develop their IT resources and staff. The IT Centre offers courses in web design, graphic design, programming & MS Office and has provided over 500 computers to 100+ schools and individuals.
 

Since 2008, the FoG Diving & Training Centre has provided 3 month Professional Diving Class III and PADI Advanced courses. It's main aim has been to direct local youth away from the destructive practice of coral mining for quick lime and provide them with qualifications for a career in professional diving. Up to 60 students graduate every year under the guidance of expert diver Mr. Sahabandu who boasts 12 years of experience with the Sri Lanka Navy.
