IC-IMPACTS and DBT Partner to Jointly Fund $3 million for Research

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and IC-IMPACTS Centres of Excellence, Canada, have partnered to create a joint “Water for Health” initiative, supporting collaborative research projects focused on developing and evaluating new technologies in the research areas of water and health.

DBT and IC-IMPACTS will each commit $1.5 million (Canadian dollars / equivalent Indian Rupees) to help strengthen innovative collaborations between researchers working in India and Canada, and to help stimulate practical research outcomes applied in communities of both nations.

IC-IMPACTS Advises TransLink on Vancouver Bridge

With leading research and innovation in safe and sustainable infrastructure, IC-IMPACTS Infrastructure Theme Lead Dr. Nemy Banthia was invited to advise TransLink on the current condition of the Patullo Bridge and how it can be improved through rehabilitation. The Patullo Bridge was constructed in 1936 and is one of the oldest bridges in the greater Vancouver region. This initiative is a testament to the infrastructure research
IC-IMPACTS is currently funding in condition assessment and structural strengthening.

Students Begin Community Engagement Fellowship Program

IC-IMPACTS and Engage North's Community Engagement Fellowship Program is moving full steam ahead with students beginning their projects in communities.

Rachel Harris will be completing her fellowship in Dene Tha' First Nation, Alberta, identifying opportunities of improving public health in remote communities. Malaya Bishop and Jason Wang will be completing their fellowships in Hamlet of Pangnirtung, Nunavut. Malaya will be studying and showcasing world class and local Inuit art; meanwhile, Jason will be working to bring youth, community, and business partners together to generate interests in science and technology.

IC-IMPACTS at the Canada India Infrastructure Forum

IC-IMPACTS was present at the Canada India Infrastructure Form on April 23, 2014 in Ottawa, Canada. The Forum was hosted by the Canada India Foundation and was attended by Canadian and Indian government decision-makers and senior business leaders representing companies active in the infrastructure sector in both countries.

UBC.ca Feature Story

The University of British Columbia (UBC) has showcased an interactive story about IC-IMPACTS on their main website, UBC.ca. The article will be featured for a period of four months and contains beautiful images, audio snippets, student pieces, and animated video.

Stewart Beck and Irving Leblanc Join
IC-IMPACTS Board of Directors

On May 14, 2014, Stewart Beck (Canadian High Commissioner to the Republic of India) and Irving Leblanc (Associate Director, AFN Housing) formally joined IC-IMPACTS as Board Members. Their expertise and knowledge in Indian and First Nation affairs respectively will prove extremely valuable to IC-IMPACTS.

Dr. Aitchison Elected to Royal Society of Edinburgh

Dr. Stewart Aitchison, IC-IMPACTS theme lead for Public Health, has been elected a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The RSE was established in 1783 and is Scotland's national academy of science and letters. Dr. Aitchson was formally sworn in on May 19, 2014 in Edinburgh, Scotland.
