Region soaks up rain

Recent rainfall has provided the best start in recent memory for grain growers starting to sow their crops.  The region has recorded 150mm for 2014 so far, up from 29mm for the same period last year.  While it is only early days, these conditions are certain to have a positive follow on effects to businesses in the region.

Strengthening Swan Hill Regions Retail Industry

This project will provide targeted assistance and support to build resilience, implement marketing strategies and help grow business opportunities in an environment that is currently challenging most small businesses. The aim is to increase retailers' profitability and create additional employment.

A Retail Development Strategy will be created, with a retail specialist providing advice on trends and opportunities.
The strategy will incorporate a digital element, with the aim of using social media to drive traffic to local websites and increase foot traffic to shops and services. It will also involve actively leading, facilitating and co-ordinating events and activities that will improve customer experiences and encourage retail sales.
If you would like more information, please contact the Economic Development Unit on 5032 3033 or email ecodev@swanhill.vic.gov.au.

A consultant will undertake the strategy and is likely to be appointed next month. The study is expected to be complete by December.

Interest sought for farmers’ market study

People who want to get involved in a Swan Hill Region Farmers’ Market Steering Committee are being asked to come forward.

Council has started work on a feasibility study looking at the prospect of a genuine, accredited and regular farmers’ market for the Swan Hill region.

The study will identify the level of consumer and producer demand, the types of produce that could be sold, appropriate sites and potential stallholders. It will also provide an action plan to be used if the community decides to start a new market.

If you would like to be involved in the project, or would like more information, contact the Economic Development Unit on 5032 3033 or email ecodev@swanhill.vic.gov.au.
A consultant will undertake the feasibility study and is likely to be appointed next month. The study is expected to be complete by November.

Positive Changes to Export Grant for Aussie Exporters

Amidst all the recent economic doom and gloom there is at least some good news! The EMDG (Export Market Development Grant) has been revised in a positive way with greater benefits for Aussie exporters.  Now you can make a claim after spending just $15,000 on eligible export marketing activities rather than $20,000.

The reduction in the non-reimburasable amount means that the minimum grant is still $5,000. This is a boost for smaller exporters who previously may not have qualified for the EMDG due to not meeting the qualifying threshold.  For further information visit the website at : http://www.exportsolutions.com.au/

Building approvals

The value of building approvals in Swan Hill Rural City was $27.96 million in the 2012/13 financial year, which was 0.12% of the total value in Victoria.

The total number of all building permits issued for 2012/13 was 325, with 52 of these being dwellings / townhouses. This was down from 2011/12 which saw a total of 391 building permits issued.

The value of total building approvals has increased from an average $2.33 million per month in 2012/13 to an average of $2.71 million per month for the first eight months of the 2013/14 financial year. This positive growth is a reverse trend on the previous two years.
