Debbie Morrison Welcome from the Principal

Dear Parents

What an exciting week around the College even though it has only been a four day week. It has been buzzing with energy as students and teachers start their final leg of the journey leading up to the examination season. I have been so impressed with the additional support that has been offered students by their teachers but even more so by the huge number of students who have given up their spare time to come and embed their learning. There was even a queue of young people coming in to school on Saturday morning- now that is dedication! I have no doubt this summer will see our best ever exam results.

On Tuesday I had the chance to discover some of Northampton when I visited the County Offices and discussed all the plans I have short and longer term for KC. We really do have some amazing opportunities ahead of us and with the growing number of students wanting to join KC I have already started to increase staffing for September with some wonderful new appointments.

I have had the pleasure of admitting new students to the College this week who were not happy elsewhere and feel that KC will better meet their needs. I welcome each of you and know you will be happy here. Next week I am meeting a number of Year 6 parents who want to rethink their choice of secondary school and potentially join KC at this exciting time. I look forward to showing you around the College and sharing all that we can offer you.

On Wednesday I had the privilege of watching the A level Drama and Theatre Studies students rehearse an assessment piece- what amazing talent. I was captivated throughout and have no doubt they will do very well in their examination. Equally impressive is the art work I have seen this week as students work on their final exam pieces. There are several pieces that would not look out of place in an art gallery and I would consider purchasing for personal display at home! Indeed, we will create our own gallery exhibition one evening in the Autumn term, after all the results have come in, so that you also have the opportunity to join us and celebrate our young people's talent.

Our Key Stage 3 students may not be preparing for exams but they too are working very hard. I enjoyed reading some poetry from years 7, 8 and 9 on Thursday and have included a few pieces in this newsletter for you to enjoy too.

There are only 9 school weeks left until the summer and there is so much we want to fit in for the students. I will keep you up to date weekly through this newsletter and daily through twitter.

Wishing you a relaxing weekend despite the weather

Ms. Morrison
Principal

Children's University

The Children’s University is a National programme that rewards students for attending extra-curricular activities. Participation is voluntary, and the young people give up their time to attend the activities of their choice.

Here at Kingsthorpe College, the programme is open to all Year 7 and 8 students. We have been extremely lucky this year, and received funding to allow us to offer the Children’s University at no cost to our students (usually £6). Any student that signs up will be provided with a Children’s University Passport. This will be where they record the activities they have attended. Each time they attend an extra-curricular club, students will earn credits in their passport (1 hour of activity = 1 credit) . Once students begin to accrue credits, they will be on their way towards achieving the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.

Bronze Award – 30 Credits
Silver Award – 65 Credits
Gold Award – 100 Credits

When students reach these awards, they are invited to attend a graduation event at Northampton University. All the young people receiving awards are provided with graduation gowns and caps and are presented with their certificates in front of their friends and families.

We are currently in the process of launching the E-passport system, which allows students to record their activities online. This is really simple and safe website which allows students to:
  • Login with a unique username and password
  • Record activities and find out how many hours they need to complete until their next award
  • See what clubs their friends are attending
  • Upload pictures of the clubs they attend

We currently have over 80 students signed up to the Children’s University. For more information about the programme, or to collect E-passport login details, please contact Miss Bennett or Mrs Ingman.

Women's Tour of Britain

The first ever Women’s Tour of Britain was launched this week, and travelled through Northampton on Wednesday. The event has attracted the top female cyclists in the world, including Olympic Champion Marianne Vos and British riders Lizze Armistead and Laura Trott.

Tour

A group of year 7 students were selected to get involved in the action. They went to Althorpe Estate on Wednesday to take part in a Race event organised by British Cycling. They competed against a variety of local secondary schools in a number of short sprint races and longer endurance races. They performed fantastically and finished in 2nd position overall!  Well done to all of them

The competition finished just in time for us to watch as the Women’s Tour passed through Althorpe Estate. The students cheered on the competitors as they rode passed us, surrounded by their support teams and police vehicles. It was a truly inspirational end to the morning, which all the students thoroughly enjoyed.

Our A Level Drama students had to perform in their practical Drama exam this week. They were fantastic! The talent on show was amazing, I was blown away by their acting skills.

Why do I live?

I live for my brother, my father, my mother.
I live for my nanny, my pappy, my friends.
I live for my uncles my aunties and cousins.
I live to make memories, to share to the end.
I live for the universe.
I live for the stars.
I live because I want to, not because I can.
I live to love and love to live.
I live for a reason words cannot explain.
I live another day to try and succeed and even to fail.
I live another day to understand why.
Why the birds sing, why the dogs bark?
Why our parents are our parents?
Why we fall in love and why we fall out of it?
Why do some hate marmite, why do some love it?
Why do we have Easter and Christmas?
Why do we sleep in a bed?
Why does one of us end up dead?
And why do we believe in life after death?
My mum is a hero.
My dad is my life.
My brother is a beacon of light.
My best friend is like a sister.
My sister is my friend.
My laughter is my comforter.
My happiness is my life.
My life is my world.
That’s why I live it……….

My Shoes Day

Playing football is fun to do.
But sometimes I lose my shoe.
I kick the ball with all my might.
But my shoe is not very tight.
So I can only watch it take flight.
Higher and higher into the air. THAT’S MY SHOE.
I shout in despair.
The ball I kicked is out of play.
It’s my shoe that scored HOORAY!
My shoes the highlight of the game.
And now I’m the one to blame.
For the goalkeeper on the ground.
Cried when my shoe knocked him down.

Luke Duffy Year 7

Steven George Gerrard

Steven Gerrard what a name.
He lives within the hall of fame
A midfield man, a legend true
An Anfield player through and through.

He caresses the ball, high and low
Every week, it’s quite a show
To see his skill and weight of pass
Stevie G’s a different class.

An Anfield player from an early stage
Came through the ranks and learnt his trade
It didn’t take him long to be
The first team player we love to see.

And here he has stayed for 15 years
A god for all the “kop” to cheer
A liver bird upon his chest
And three lions is his crest.

From players past, all legends true,
King Kenny, souness and Hansen too
Stevie, Anfield is your home
Any you will never walk alone.
