A note from the:

Executive  Director

Dear Global Philadelphians:

Summer is in full swing, meaning that Philadelphians are enjoying the city's vibrant outdoor scene consisting of night markets, movies under the stars and a plethora of festivals. Many of our Muslim friends have entered the Holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting about which you can read more below.

In this July edition of the Insider, you will read about Project World Heritage City. We view this as a unique opportunity for Philadelphia to establish itself as a city of firsts, of freedom, of independence and of democracy. The beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage process is that it is decided by committee it requires energy to attain and it speaks resolutely to the chosen site's realities. Read on and become more involved in this exciting journey by joining us.

As we prepare our program for the fall, I wanted to share with you that we are progressing with a very exciting project that can benefit each and every one of you global experts in the region. I am referring to the Philly Navigator, a compendium of international experts in the region, which will be published by year's end and shared with the world's media. Our intent is to put PHL on the global map and share the brain power that exists in our region. Placement and sponsorship opportunities in this global tome are available, so contact us to find out how you can be showcased. See below for contact information.

If you did not get to attend one of our recent member events, read about them! We offer a very active journalist program with articles coming out weekly about international events in the region. Take a look at the Emerging International Journalists Program (EIJP) on our web site and discover something new and global that's happening in your favorite city: Philadelphia! We will happily cover a global story from your organization, just let us know your news.

Freedom 5k
Friends of Independence National Historical Park organized the Freedom 5k, a race on June 29 to support the upkeep of Independence Mall. A World Heritage Site, Independence Hall provided the start and end point for the race. Runners could choose their team at registration: the Patriots or the Loyalists, and this race provided an opportunity to explore Old City's historical attractions on the path of the run.

The 2014 FIFA Tournament in Brazil, who has hosted the World Cup twice now, has exhibited a thrilling arena of matches and feats. Since the inaugural tournament in 1930, a championship has been awarded every four years, except during the Second World War. This time, the quarter finals are full of competitive teams from two fútbol dominated continents, Europe and South America. The end is almost near for this World Cup, and no European team has won any World Cup titles when hosted in South America. Without a doubt, the next few games left in the tournament will be captivating!

Brazil

Global Philadelphia Association is committed to raising Philadelphia’s awareness about emerging regions and global opportunities. Brazil, one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and current host to the World Cup, is increasingly an important player in international business and culture.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the official inflation rate for May stayed lower than normal, at .46%. This fall corresponds with a discount given by the São Paulo government to those who conserve water and sewage. The discount—30% for those who cut usage by 20%—led to a drop of 21.98% in the cost of those utilities, and sets a precedent for future policy decisions.

In a recent issue of Nature, the magazine found that Brazil’s annual investment in scientific research reached US $27 billion, further cementing its place as a research leader in South America. With 40,306 articles published in 2013, it is immensely prolific, although its per capita productivity is more comparable to Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile. Financially, Brazil stands alone; they are the only South American country to set aside 1% of its GDP to research and development.

Ramadan

June 29 marked the beginning of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and a period of fasting and prayer for Muslims. The Islamic calendar consists of twelve months, lasting 354 days in total, with Ramadan always falling on the ninth month. The Islamic holiday is a month of prayer, charity, self accountability and holiness for Muslims, and fasting during the daylight hours is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Commemorating the time when the Qu'ran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammad, this month is said to be the holiest of seasons.

Portugal

Famous for its beautiful tourist attractions, Portugal’s economy is based primarily on services, making up 75% of the annual GDP, with industry following at 22%. Portugal is known for its Algarve resort area and for its excellent food and drink, and its port wine is particularly recognized everywhere. Lisbon, Portugal is a natural gateway to Europe due to its airport, and there are direct flights daily from PHL to LIS. The country became part of the European Economic Union in 1986, creating a more diversified and service-based economy. It began circulating the Euro in 2002, along with 11 other EU members, after qualifying in 1998 for the Economic and Monetary Union. With a population of about 10,000,000, Portugal has long been known as a low cost provider of goods and services in Europe. The addition of Eastern European countries into the European Union has caused the Portuguese government to realize that the productivity of the labor force, as well as the products produced, must be upgraded. The role of training and education has therefore been embraced, and the country views training in a very positive light.

Portugal is impressive in its World Heritage status, boasting seven World Heritage Cities, including Sintra, Oporto, Guimaraes, Évora and Angra do Heroísmo, and eight World Heritage sites inscribed by UNESCO. The mayor of Sintra, Basilo Horta, is currently the President of the Organization of World Heritage Cities. The OWHC has been instrumental in promoting the country, as it allows Portugal to showcase its leadership in terms of policies that are specifically dedicated to the listed cities. As a country full of tourism, World Heritage designations help publicize and nurture Portugal’s rich culture.

Introducing Global Gateways

Global Gateways is the Global Philadelphia Association's new venture that was launched in January. This initiative views each and every member of the Association as a "Global Gateway" for this international region.

What is it?
Global Gateways is a year-long program authored by the Association and its Members. Global Gateways is about connections, storytelling and trajectories. It is about giving our Members a chance to tell, in their own words, about their impacts and expertise as "Gateways" between the Philadelphia region and the world. One key implementation of the program is through a World Days Calendar: a dynamic, year-long agenda of internationally celebrated days tailored to our Members. The World Days Calendar will anchor the Global Gateways program throughout 2014.
Via our various web platforms, opportunities for collaborative events- and more- Global Gateways will promote and support our members in ways previously unexplored.

When is this happening?
It has already started. Global Gateways is the Association's latest Key Initiative and our website will be continuously updated with all of the "Gateways" events and news. Visit the Global Gateways page here
