June Good News Newsletter

This is our last newsletter as Art in the Park, in June we re-launch with our new name!

Just as everything is exploding with life outside, we are all set for a summer bursting with events and changes.  We are pleased to be running workshops at Sheffield's first major gardening event and you could also join us at various family friendly workshops happening in June as part of the Children's Festival, Peace in the Park and Armed Forces Day.

This month we're also marking the culmination of our Sacred Spaces project with a celebration of Sacred Sharrow.  We'd also like to introduce our new Project Co-ordinator, Panni Loh, and we're on the look out for volunteers and interns to support our summer work and relaunch.

Finally, at the bottom of this email we have pictures from some of April's events.

Remember, you can click on the links in this text to jump to the relevant sections of the newsletter and click on the links below to find out more about the events, projects or partners...

Sacred Sharrow
Thursday 5th June, 4-7.30pm
Highfield Trinity Church, off London Road, S2 4UR,

Since the autumn we have been exploring what makes a space special with the residents of Sharrow, and now we are celebrating the artwork they created.

Come along to share stories of the places that were special to you as a child, draw the spaces you love today and find out more about the amazing things go on in the Sharrow community.

Common Thread Clothes Exchange will be making rag flowers, Magic Lantern Film Club will be showing local short films and Timebuilders be showing a film and showcasing a book for a local project called Apna Stories. There will also be storytelling, art workshops, music from Paul Littlewood and cakes from The Rude Shipyard.  The event is free and suitable for all ages.

During the project we partnered with Sheffield University students to provide visual arts and creative writing workshops for around 100 local residents in community centres and playgrounds.  The artwork created captured people’s thoughts and views of their favourite spaces and what makes those spaces important and sacred and will be on view at the event.
Garden Up
7th and 8th June
Botanical Gardens,

This year sees Sheffield’s first ‘premier gardening event’ – Garden Up.  As part of the Children’s Zone, Sheffield Children’s University has asked us to provide a free flower craft workshop for children aged 3-16.

Working with our artists in the children’s marquee youngsters will create fantastical flowers using various materials including card, wire, fantasy film, recycled bottles and paints.

Once created the flowers can then be “planted” in the gardens for everyone to enjoy.

The Garden Up event is ticketed, but free to accompanied under 16s. There is no additional charge for this activity and children will be able to gain credits towards their Children’s University. CU Passports at £2 each will also be on sale in The Little Nature shop. Families/carers will be able to book children onto the art workshops during the event. The activities will run on an hourly basis throughout the ‘Garden Up’ weekend.

To find out more about Sheffield Children’s University at their website, Facebook page, blog and twitter account.

You can read more about the Garden Up event at their website and in The Star.

Ignite Imaginations
(our new name!)

This year we are celebrating 10 successful years as Art in the Park, and we are changing our name to Ignite Imaginations. What we do wont change, but the new name better reflects our growth and the variety of work we now do.

The official switch will happen in mid-June.  At that time we will launch our new website and switch our email addresses and social media accounts to the new name too.

Introducing our new Project Co-ordinator...

Panni Loh
Panni started working with us in the end of April and we're delighted to have her with us.

She loves working with people, art and the environment. She has studied social work, teaching and art, worked in the community sector for years, coordinated family learning, afterschool sessions and adult education.

Outside of Art in the Park Panni is a researcher for Sheffield Hallam University and a freelance artist who has exhibited her paintings and photography around the world.

You can read more about her here and contact her on: panni@igniteimaginations.org.uk
Want to volunteer with us?

We are recruiting for new volunteers to help us out at events and in our office.  Volunteers support our artists at events and help us with admin and publicity in the office.  For some it is about gaining valuable experience in community arts events or publicity for future employment, for others volunteering is a way of getting involved in the community, keeping their interest in art alive or trying something new.

If you are interested in getting involved email us at admin@artinthepark.org.uk.

Summer internship

We are also looking for a volunteer intern to support us at events, with publicity and through the relaunch.  They will need to work 100 hours from the 1st July to the end of September (we can be flexible with when the hours are done in this period and so holiday and other commitments can be accommodated).  For more details please see our website
To apply for this post send a covering letter and CV by 5pm Monday 15th June to admin@artinthepark.org.uk.
Recent work

If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter you may have seen some pictures and quotes from our recent workshops.

We've run poetry classes in the Central library with the Multi-Story Festival, reflected on the past in Jordanthorpe in our Before Now project, explored voicelessness as part of Sheffield University's Festival of Medicine and been den building in Furnace Park for our Microhabitats project.

Before Now...

We've been exploring our connections with the past in South Sheffield this Spring.  Our sessions in Lower Meadows, Abbey Lane, Norton Free schools and the local sheltered housing schemes have now finished.  The project will continue through the summer and into next school year with more sessions in the local libraries.  Below are some pictures from the sessions and of the artwork created.
