Patient & Community Voices at UBC a catalyst for change in the UK

After a 2 week visit to the UBC Division of Health Care Communication, Dr. Clare-Price Dowd is back in the UK to improve patient involvement in the National Health System.

"I was particularly inspired by the Health Mentors program, the principles of which I want to replicate in the UK." says Dr. Price-Dowd who was humbled to see the work undertaken by mentors with complex health needs to develop and support the next generation of healthcare professionals.

"I have too many people to thank individually, but special thanks go to Angela, Bill, Cathy and Brianne at UBC and members of the community, mentors and students who gave their time to speak to me individually. You have been the catalyst for improved involvement in the UK."

Community and academics share the stage at CUVIC 2014

A team of collaborators in the work of the UBC Division of Health Care Communication (DHCC) travelled to Victoria to share their success stories of university-community engagement arising from their work together over more than 6 years.

Cheryl Hewitt, Paul Kerston and Sue Macdonald are long-time partners with Drs. Angela Towle and Bill Godolphin in the work to enhance patient and community involvement in health professional education at UBC. The team was among a few joint presentations by academics and community partners at the Community-University Engagement Conference (CUVIC) in May. "It's nice to see the university community beginning to embrace the larger ‘community’," says Paul. Read more...
