June 2014 MSP Audio Geeks Meetup

Thursday, June 26, 2014

June's MSP Audio Geeks Meetup is on Thursday, June 26 at 1:30pm. This is a special event, hosted by Rob Byers and Corey Schreppel of Minnesota Public Radio | American Public Media.

We will start the afternoon off with a tour of MPR. After that we will walk over to the Fitzgerald Theater to sit in on a rehearsal for the popular show Wits. After the rehearsal we'll have the chance to discuss some of the elements that go into running a live show, as well as the workflow involved in recording and broadcasting a live performance.

From the website: Wits is a live public radio show that brings world-class comedians, actors and musicians to the stage where host John Moe gives them and the audience the time of their lives. Wits mixes improv, sketch comedy, conversation, music and genuine beauty in a program praised as “one of the rare public radio comedy shows that’s actually funny” (Huffington Post) and “on course to become a national hit” (USA Today).

The rehearsal will be for the show on Friday, June 27 featuring stand-up comic Hari Kondabolu and musician and Okkervil River front man Will Sheff. The show starts at 8pm and you can purchase tickets through Ticketmaster or by calling the Fitzgerald Theater at 651-290-1200. There are special discounts for MPR members and for Wits Social Club members.

Attendance is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. You must RSVP at http://june2014mspaudiogeeks.eventbrite.com to attend this event!

Music Mafia MN: Gender in Music & Media

June 3, 2014

What is the biggest problem with the music industry? There are a lot of problems, right? Whatever the case, I think we can agree that the underrepresentation of women in the music and media industries is a major issue that needs to be constructively discussed and dealt with in our community.

Gender In Music and Media:

  • Ice Breaker â€“ Discussions are meant to be interactive, so this will help us all get in the swing of playing together nicely.
  • Where is the line between art and exploitation? - Lean In, TheRepresentationProject, European Advertisements, and American Media: Discussion and examples.
  • Stats and Stuff - Lots of people have studied these theories. Here’s what the fancy numbers tell us about the impact of gender stereotyping in media.
  • The Local Angle - Where does all this infiltrate the music industry, and how has it affected our local community?  Discussion, and testimonial of local musicians.
  • Open Discussion / Q & A â€“ What else do you have to add?  What would you like to ask from others involved in this discussion?
Date: Tuesday June 3rd
Time: 6:00-8:00pm
Location: Black Bear Crossing - Michael Glass Room
1360 North Lexington Parkway
St. Paul, Minnesota 55103

Welcome to 1979 Bands Banding Together

Kickstarter Campaign - through June 1st!

Five Bands travel to Nashville to record live to our vinyl cutting lathe. No Edits. No Overdubs. All Analog. All Awesome.

Welcome To 1979 (an all analog recording studio in Nashville, TN) has teamed up with 5 bands from around the country: Mary Bue & The Last Bastion, Jam Therapy, Don Gallardo & How Far West, Phoenix Rising, and 2/3 Goat.

The goal? Record and release 5 vinyl records in a very unique way: live, in-studio and directly to vinyl. This is how records were first made, and has been all but abandoned now because...well, it’s hard as hell. But the final product sounds awesome and is analog from start to finish. Truth be told, very few artists ever get the chance to make a record in this way.

Check out the Kickstarter page to learn more and support the project!

Audio Society of Minnesota

The Audio Society of Minnesota is a non-commercial hobby organization incorporated in 1979. They present monthly meetings from September to May/June of each year, and publish a monthly ASM Bulletin during that time.

They support all audiophile interests. They have tube freaks and solid-state freaks, people who only listen to digital and people who would be happy if digital had never been invented, folks who have never seen an LP in their lives and others who have thousands, members who think nothing of making major expenditures for audio gear and others who are interested in the best bang for their buck, some with advanced degrees in engineering and some who don't know an Ohm from a Watt, those who think of their hobby as a science and those who think of it as an art. But they all have one thing in common: They love music and they love to hear it accurately and emotionally recreated in their homes.

Meetings are held at the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting:
3517 Raleigh Avenue
St. Louis Park, MN 55416
