Upcoming Deadlines
- The Notice of Intent (NOI) for NSERC's Discovery Grant is due on August 1, 2014. The NOI is mandatory to submit the full application in November.
- The Notice of Intent (NOI) for SSHRC's Insight Grant is due on August 15, 2014. Applicants who have not submitted a NOI by this date will be ineligible to submit a full application to the October 2014 competition.
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Proof of Principle (POP) Phase I and Phase II applications are due by the internal UofT deadline, August 25, 2014.
- UTM's Office of the V.P., Research has announced its second call for proposals for its Internal Funding competition. Applications for both the Research and Scholarly Activity Fund and the Outreach, Conference and Colloquia Fund can be submitted to Rong Wu (rong.wu@utoronto.ca) by 5 pm on September 19, 2014.

Anthropology
- Professor Esteban Parra received a grant from the National Institute of Justice of the US as a co-Principal Investigator. The grant is entitled "Genomewide association of quantitative pigmentary traits in admixed US populations."
Biomedical Communications
- Congratulations to Senior Lecturer Marc Dryer on receiving the Institute of Medical Science (IMS) Graduate Course Lecturer Award!
Biology
- Congratulations to Professor Darryl Gwynne for winning the Quest Award for his research in animal behaviour!
- Congratulations to student Tammy Duong from the McCauley Lab for winning the Dean's Excellence Award for Research Excellence!
- The department welcomes two new faculty members: Steven Chatfield, Lecturer in Plant Form and Function, and Ted Erclik, Assistant Professor in Cell and Developmental Biology.

- Professor Jumi Shin was awarded a Collaborative Health Research Grant with core faculty researchers Warren Chan and Eli Sone from the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. The grant will help to fund research on a nanoparticle drug-delivery system to combat cancer.

- Professor Katherine Rehner was awarded a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Education & Curriculum Services Canada to explore the proficiency and confidence levels of Grade 12 French-as-a-second-language learners from across the province of Ontario.
- Professor Ramón A. Victoriano-Martínez published his book, Rayanos y Dominicanyorks: la dominicanidad del siglo XXI (Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana, Pittsburgh, 2014).
Sociology
- The department is welcoming three new faculty members as of July: Randol Contreras, who studies the causes and consequences of violent crime; Melissa Milkie, who works in the area of social determinants of mental health; and David Pettinicchio, who researches public policy development, social movements and political change.
