Respect for Nature Week

May 23 through May 29

Feeling Like a Natural (Wo)man

MAY 22, 2014

Sorry I'm late this week with the launch of the Goal Tender! Marci and I were on the road for a couple of days so I didn't get to the computer until this morning. I'll bet you're in the same kind of "pre-holiday-weekend-rush" as we are, though, so I hope we still have time to help you respectfully plan your challenge for the week!

7 principles of lntRespect our natural world. What’s up with that? Well, it’s about the principles of Leave No Trace, pack in/pack out, Reduce-Reuse-Recycle. In other words, as you go out this holiday weekend and see all the great things that our parks and forests have to offer, take only pictures and leave only footprints.

Speaking of taking pictures, Saturday is our Day in the Life of a State Park photo essay day. If you’re new to PPFF, you may not have been exposed to this concept yet so think of the idea of our state parks frozen in time for one day. We ask all of our friends and members, including you GPOC-ers, to be sure and go out to a state park on Saturday and take a picture of what you find there. The photos will be assembled into a gallery on our Facebook page (and maybe even one of PR Jen’s great little videos) for all to enjoy as a snapshot of all the ways park visitors were enjoying the parks on one single day.

Why Saturday? Well, it happens to be the 121st anniversary of the very first Pennsylvania state park at Valley Forge which is, yes, now a national park. Help us to preserve the memory of the system 121 years after that first wonderful day. Send your pictures to the PPFF newsletter mailbox before 10:00 AM on Monday morning please!
Raccoon Creek Waterfall
All it takes is a sunny day or two and Bill and Pam are ready to let the wheels roll! It's wonderful to see things getting so green on the Great Allegheny Passage and although the trillium is now past bloom, the Mayapples have begun to appear. Let the summer begin!

Why not kick off your summer with an Extravaganza? If so, we know just the place! The Butler Outdoor Club's 14th annual Outdoor Extravaganza takes place at Breakneck Campground near McConnells Mill and Moraine state parks this weekend with lots of activities, presentations AND a gear exchange.

PPFF On the Move

With any luck at all, most of our collective PPFF "moving" this week will be GPOC related! Poor Marci is dealing with a pulled muscle in her back and has been told she can't bike; my ankle is just about healed (but would you believe I tweaked it last night getting into bed?) so hiking is out for me. However, my plan is to head up to Prince Gallitzin State Park on Saturday for their salute to the veterans ceremony at 10:00 AM.

120 Seconds x 5

If you happened to catch Today at some point during this past week you might have seen their 60 Second Shape Up series starring nutritionist Joy Bauer and personal trainer Jenna Wolfe each contributing 60 seconds of specialty advice each day.

I can definitely sniff peppermint all day, every day. Now I've just got to work on the one-legged squats!

Senior Health & Fitness Day

On Wednesday, May 28th all of us over the age of ___ will make a concerted effort to "Make a Move Toward Better Health" on National Senior Health & Fitness Day. The goal is a simple one - to help older Americans stay healthy and fit.

Our most recent Penn's Stewards focused on that same issue, didn't it?

Health Watch

On the Health Watch this week is the National Weather Service's Beat the Heat Day on Friday. The NWS says that heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, and their website has a lot of great information about the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and ways to treat them. Incredible is the animation on just how fast the inside of a car can become unbearable.

Do NOT become a statistic this summer! It's safe to say that all of us are looking forward to beating the heat this year with (a) a little ice cream; (b) a little swimming; (c) a little mountain top vista breeze. And "let's be careful out there!"

One surefire way to beat the heat is with a paddling excursion and we're happy to announce that the winner of our Canoe Susquehanna gift certificate (randomly chosen from all GPOCers registered prior to May 20th) is Kristen M. of Harrisburg. Congratulations!
