Looking backwards, looking forwards. Last week of May, here are some things that are new, old and awesome.

Just Landed

Hello friends.

We've been hyping the new Sharon Van Etten album all month, so we're psyched that it has finally landed and we can all start enjoying it's splendour. 'Are We There' has been the May record of the month and follows her stunning 2012 LP 'Tramp'. Speaking about it herself, "I learned a very important lesson from recording the album Tramp, I had an amazing time working with Aaron Dessner (of The National) and I'm so lucky that he put the time in and he put his heart into it and taught me a lot about learning how to communicate. At the end of the day, I ended up feeling a little insecure about having my songs tied with all these bigger names and feeling like the idea that I wrote the song is in the shadows of everyone else. So for this album - Are We There? - I really wanted to show that I was in charge, with Stewart Lerman holding my hand while this was all going on."

It's bold, raw, honest and led by devastating song writing. Sharon really is at the peak of her powers and it's not over-playing it to dub 'Are We There' an instant classic.

The limited edition clear vinyl will (might have already) sell out as you read this, so do not snooze. CD & Black Vinyl are in ample supply, after all, we intend to play this sucker to death. She's going to be on the Jools Holland show next week so you know we'll get inundated.

This week we will also load a handful (there are only 100 for the whole UK!) of SVE "Taking Chances" 7"s to the website. Keep dropping past...

Record of the week is an absolute treat. Performed by Ben Frost with Greg Fox (ex-Liturgy), Shahzad Ismaily and Thor Harris (SWANS) and largely written in Eastern DR Congo, A U R O R A aims directly, through its monolithic construction, at blinding luminescent alchemy; not with benign heavenly beauty but through decimating magnetic force. Pulling in sonics from aircrafts in flight and the almost superhuman drumming of his guests, Ben Frost has conducted an album that is addictive and in places terrifying. It really does stuff to your body.

Another highly recommended album this week is Academy Award nominated Owen Pallett's In Conflict. The album was written and produced by Owen and recorded by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Peter Gabriel, Last Shadow Puppets). It features contributions from Brian Eno on synth, guitar and vocals and also The Czech FILMharmonic Orchestra amongst others. “It’s meant to approach insanity in a positive way” says Owen of the record. It’s full of love songs, conveyed in Owen’s inimitable cinematic, indie pop style.

Blackest Ever Black presents to you Dead Unique, an album by Officer! recorded in 1995 but - outrageously, inexplicably - never before released into the public domain. This then is not a reissue or a revival; it’s a new record that just happens to have been maturing in the cask for, oh, a little shy of 20 years. It also happens to be a lost classic of English art-rock, and the crowning achievement in the career of its mercurial creator, Mick Hobbs.

Also out in this busy week are new releases from: MarthaHercules & Love AffairRöyksopp & Robyn, Sam Smith and Daughter.

Factory Benelux and New Order present Of Factory New York, a unique benefit album released to assist Michael Shamberg, who ran the NYC office of Factory Records during the celebrated label’s Eighties heyday.

Soundway’s second foray into South East Asia is focused on North-East Thailand, the epicentre of Molam and Luk Thung Isan music. Hypnotic phin & khaen riffs, pulsing, electrified country rhythms and heartfelt vocals punctuate another journey into the lesser known reaches of 1970s Thai music.

The idea of the Speedy Wunderground label was to create something immediate, harking back to the golden age of rock and roll - where records were written, recorded and put out in a short space of time. All Speedy records are recorded and produced by Dan in one day, followed by mixing for one day, released on 7” single in limited runs of 250 as soon as is humanly possible. ‘Speedy Wunderground: Year 1’ is a collection of the first year’s singles along with the B-sides.

Re-issues this week are also ample and in splendid form. You can view the whole collection here.

The highlight for us is another artefact from the Light in the Attic roster. In 1983, a man named Lewis recorded an album named L’Amour, which was released on the unknown label R.A.W. And that’s about all we know. The ingredients are simple: smooth synthesizers, feather-light piano, ethereal, occasionally inaudible vocals and the gentle plucking of acoustic guitars. Prepare to become obsessed, it's a real gem.

Originally released on the Kapp label in 1970, Linda Perhacs’ sleeper psych-folk opus is revisited by the Anthology label, who present the definitive version of Parallelograms, mastered from the original tapes and including a bonus LP of demos and interviews. It's one of the best acid/valley albums we've ever heard and it took her forty four years to follow up.

Scott Walker's seminal studio albums - Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3 and Scott 4 are individually released along with the highly sought after ‘Til The Band Comes In (known in Japan as Scott 5). Each album was remastered at Abbey Road studios from the original analogue tapes. They sound superb and the price is great too!

We also got in the first batch of vinyl reissues as part of the Blue Note 75th anniversary campaign, Horace Silver, Grant Green, Hank Mobley and McCoy Tyner just landed with plenty more in the next few months.
