Dear *|HTML:NAME|*

Back from Namibia, I am deeply aware of the power of desertification and how people adapt to cope with such severe environmental conditions. And deeply gratified for what water and green we still have in our country. Not for a moment to forget the advancing threats of desertification to South Africa, and to our vulnerable Mama Afrika. And the preciousness of her waters - our requirement for life.

So I am excited about the Great Green Wall initiative in the Sahal-Saharian region in the north, where 11 countries are working together to create a 15km wide green strip across the breast of Africa from the west to the east.

Over 7000 km they are linking hands on governmental level to resolve issues of the advancing deserts as well as poverty, degradation of soils, depleting vegetation covers, drying up rivers and lakes, increasing soil erosion and the resultant threats of conflicts between communities.

With international funding to this extremely climate vulnerable region, presidents are taking the lead and aligning policies and investments for life on earth, and those barriers that have set them back for decades. So great to find a properly organised and collaborative approach and an inspiring example of the Spirit of Collaboration. Now imagine if we could draw this green strip down south, up north and gradually across the entire planet – across the oceans! THIS is the future we are living for.

We are looking forward to World Environment Day on 5 June and World Oceans Day on 8 June. If are doing anything in this line, please send your news or events to Tara at tara@thegreentimes.co.za. If you are a green business doing green actions on this or any other day, we would also like to hear from you. We lead by example so sharing is essential. Find upcoming events to attend here.

Read more, be inspired to think big and manifest hope for the future in everything you do this week.

Focus on food – the essence of life

Design & Making - the story of food small“In focusing on food, we are focusing on the essence of life, the grand sweep of history, monumental shifts in the landscape of production, industry, and commerce, and the impact of all this on society, communities, and ordinary people,” said Marjorie Naidoo Manager Communications and Sector Promotion of the Cape Craft & Design Institute. “We chose the storage, preservation and packaging of food as this is object-based, and we could draw on the rich store of Iziko’s Social History Collections, as well as contemporary designer-makers, and the complex contribution of the industrialised era.”
