Roots & Wings: A Closer Look

As part of the process of enrolling a child in Roots & Wings, each family that applies undergoes a "home study." It's a key part, because not only does it give us a closer look into their current home life, but it allows us to visit them in their environment and simply listen to what they have to say.

The result is always an overwhelming amount of openness and oftentimes a

raw display of emotions. Last month, we performed home studies with 4 different families. Their stories, while each unique, shared many similarities: childhoods filled with a great deal of pain; lives tainted by suffering and crippling despair.

But they all have something else in common. They have each taken a step towards actively working to give their children a better life. They sought us out, applied to Roots & Wings, and are asking us to help.

These mothers want so very desperately for their children to know joy and experience the love they were deprived of.

This is the reason for our very existence: to help families. We ache to join hands with each family and work as a team, fighting together to give each of their children a better future. We live to tell parent and child alike just how much God loves them, a God that they can look to for strength and purpose.

God has already begun something amazing in each of these families. Our hope and prayer is that these stories of sadness and hurt become testimonies of change and triumph as God touches their lives.

This month we said goodbye to two of our precious children, sisters Kena and Daniela.

In Kena and Daniela's short 1 and 2 years, they have experienced tremendous abuse and neglect. Yet, over the past 3 months, we were able to see them slowly begin to heal physically and emotionally. We were able to witness Kena and Daniela grow in confidence as they began believing they are children of value and worth in God's eyes and in ours.

We will miss Kena and Daniela terribly. But we rest assured that their greatest Caregiver, their Heavenly Father, goes with them as they move on.
