Kingsthorpe College
Debbie Morrison Welcome from the Principal

Dear Parents

Can I start by saying thank you to all the staff who have done such a wonderful job over the last few weeks supporting our students in their examination preparation. You have certainly gone the extra mile in making certain students get the very best grades possible and will have made such a difference to so many of them. Thank you also to all those staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes making certain the school functions effectively so teachers can teach and students can learn – we could not do it without you all.
My next thank you goes to the students themselves who have worked so very hard. They have attended revision sessions throughout the day as well as in the evenings; they are even going to be in next week with their teachers squeezing in some extra hours of hard work. They are an absolute credit to the school, their families and themselves and really do deserve huge success this summer.
I have had the pleasure of meeting many Year 11’s this week for 1-1 interviews about their plans for next year and it has been wonderful to hear so many talk enthusiastically about returning to Post 16 studies with us after the summer. I really am looking forward to having you as 6th form students and working with you all to make KC even better as well as obviously supporting you in your dreams of going to University.
Everyone now needs a bit of a break to refresh and re energise so that we can come back and continue to create wonderful opportunities for each other.

Relax and enjoy the week ahead with your families

Ms. Morrison

Letter from the Chair of Governors

This has been a really exciting half term. The weekly newsletter has been filled with positive news of the activities of our students and the opportunities that are available for them. We are in the midst of the summer examination period and we hope that each student achieves the very best results possible. The support of family, friends and staff at Kingsthorpe College is so important. The break over the half term holiday will give some space for much needed relaxation!

I visit Kingsthorpe College regularly on behalf of the Collaborative Academies Trust (which sponsors Kingsthorpe College) and in my role as Chair of Governors. This week has seen evening meetings of our two Governors Committees. The Achievement Committee provides an opportunity for Governors to monitor the performance of students as a whole and to discuss possible changes to the curriculum and what students will study. We have also had the chance to learn more about the work of the Achievement Directors and the tutor teams. At the Staffing and Resources Committee we reviewed the budget position and plans for the future. I have also had the pleasure of visiting parts of the College and seeing students hard at work in lessons. I have also met with the Principal to discuss staffing for September and we have made some exciting appointments. We are all determined to build on the successes of Kingsthorpe College!

With best wishes,

Chris Hilliard
Chair of Governors

Star of the week

Purple House Star of the Week
Shah Alhabib Year 11

Despite challenges Shah returned to KC and worked very hard to improve his grades and achieve his aim of going to Oxford or Cambridge. He is currently working above target in subjects and has been a credit to his family, himself and KC. What a role model!

Red House Star of the Week
Zachary Deacon Year 8

Zachary is a thoroughly lovely student, always polite and well behaved and has shown  initiative outside of lessons, looking for and buying books independently to support his learning. He has excellent attendance as well. Congratulations, an all-round star.

Gold House Star of the Week
Reece Minards Year 10

Reece has made a huge effort to improve in all aspects of his education. Reece has been taking his studies much more seriously and has arrived on time and ready to work every day for the last two weeks. Overall Reece has improved his attitude to learning. Well done Reece.

Green House Star of the Week

Max was in the Northampton Scout Gang show on Saturday at the Deco Theatre. He was brilliant and performed really well for a whole 2 hours along with other cast members and  he performed a brilliant solo. What a super star.

English Revision

On 29th and 30th April, Caroline Bentley-Davies IGCSE examiner and author of the teacher’s book ‘How to be an Amazing Teacher’   came into the school to run a series of active revision workshops with Year 11 pupils. Caroline commented on the behaviour of pupils saying:

‘I really enjoyed working with the Year 11 pupils. I travel to schools across the country and pupils at Kingsthorpe are always a delight to teach  I was very impressed with their motivation, work ethic and their evident enjoyment of English. They have many good ideas and they are very keen to succeed. It was great to see them joining in and getting excited about revision.  I wish them well with their exams – and would encourage them to revise hard and spend time ensuring that they really know their  set texts and poetry well, so that they can shine in the exams.

Exam Reminder

The exams can be a stressful time for our students but there are some tips that can help reduce this stress such as:

  • Get a good nights sleep before the exam

  • Bring the correct equipment
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the exam
  • Relax, don't get stressed
  • Use a revision timetable.
  • Revise in a quiet environment
  • Revise in chunks of no more than 40 minutes
  • Take regular breaks
  • Attend revision sessions.

Anglian Water Challenge

On Monday 12th May Anglian Water worked with 100 of our Year 8 students in small groups. These students were taught about the role of Anglian water with regards to the cleaning processes, and the management of our water supply. They were given the task to plan a route for a series of pipe networks to enable clean water to reach a variety of settlements. The students were asked to justify their route, keeping to a budget of £12,000, which incorporated the cost of the land, and the materials needed. All of the students worked collaboratively and were able to test their water network, to check that all of the settlements had an even distribution of water.  This was an amazing opportunity for our students to engage with an external corporation to understand one of the physical processes within the study of Geography.

Girls U13 County Cup Football Final

As you may be aware it was the U13 County Cup Football Final last night and it was KCs chance to win the final and retain our  title and trophy. The game started slowly and there was an early goal from the opposition. Once the girls settled into the game they played some good football and managed to score 3 goals. At 3-1 we were all on edge as the ball went up and down the pitch with both teams looking like they might score. The other team managed to score 2 making it 3-3 at the end of full time. We played extra time where we had the majority of the ball and plenty of scoring chances however could not get it passed their keeper.

The final whistle went meaning 3-3 and a draw. This means that yet again we are COUNTY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!!!! We do have to share the trophy with Caroline Chisholm School but we still remain the best U13 girls football team in the County.

I would like to say a massive well done and thank you to the following girls:

Georgia Miah, Olivia Perrin, Abi Caborn,  Maddie Cooke, Chloe Thompson, Sarah Calpin, Evie Edwards, Jess Lonergan, Caitlyn Robinson, Courtney Barker, Saskia Little.

You were amazing, you played brilliantly as a team and you deserved to come away with that trophy!! You should be very proud of yourselves, you did Kingsthorpe College proud!!

Also I would like to thank the parents and staff who managed to get down and support the girls. It was great to have that support and the girls really appreciated it.

Again, WELL DONE!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Miss Crossland

Level One Rugby Leaders Award
(RFU All Schools Programme)

A group of Year 9/10 boys (Connor Stratton; Tom White; Kallum Lovell; Reece Williams; Hayden Tebbutt; Chris Shepperd; Josh Brooks; Dan Byrne; Bradley Small; Sam Cowley; Charlie Merrey; Reece Waterfield) recently completed a Level One Rugby Leaders Award delivered by the RFU. The training was focussed around the 5 core values of Rugby; teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. Throughout the training the students worked in groups to plan a variety of games, coaching drills and activities. They were then given the challenge to lead these activities for a group of year 7 and 8 students. Although nervous at the start, all the boys rose to the challenge and lead an activity for their younger peers. They not only demonstrated some fantastic leadership skills, but also began to review each other’s sessions and give positive and constructive feedback to one another. It was great to see them all develop so much over the space of the day.  The boys themselves stated that the training made them feel much more confident to lead activities. In the afternoon, the students were also put through their Tag Rugby Umpire Training which they all passed with flying colours.

The RFU not only want this course to develop students as confident, capable rugby leaders but also to have a community delivery element to it as well. We are therefore in the process of organising a Rugby Festival for local primary schools. The students will take complete responsibility for the planning and delivery of the festival. This will provide them with an opportunity to apply their newly acquired coaching and refereeing skills.

A Dream Upon Clouds

I drift away in the clouds, a fantasy of the eternal splendour of the sky
Sense your soul, sense your heartbeat as the clouds cry in pain
I’ll reach out to the blazing stars up stars as life passes by
Howling clouds can only precipitate nothing more but words hurt as much as actions

Excruciating torture day by day not a second may pass to attain your passions

Forgotten, erased, elapsed in your closed eye wonderland
I dream of happiness, a life without a struggle, a place named Neverland,
I’m stuck in heaven, imprisoned, deprived, defected, good or bad only you can decide,

I feel I will wake one day,
But in the real world, filled with agony and sorrow, is the true nightmare
Once upon a time you can run away from fears once upon a time you will understand,

Not matter what they say,
Keep your dreams but don’t dream your life away.

Croos-Country Race

I was really nervous standing at the line,
I don’t know why they didn’t start the race,
It was already time.

The gun was like a lions roar, going off with a
Loud BANG!
All the 200 girls or so heard it so we started
and ran.

It wasn’t a good start; everyone was
Pushing and shoving,
All I could hear was huffing and puffing.

While I was running I could hear shouting,
It was my club egging me on because I was
Doubting.

In the distance I could see the finish line,
I started to spring; I knew it was about time.
I overtook about 15 people,
Someone tried to spike me, which was lethal!
I dodged past it and crossed the line,
All I knew was the gold medal was mine.

Nans

No words can describe how great a nan is,
She has wrinkles on her face,
And rollers in her hair,
Her hair is white as snow.
She had many personalities,
She is kind,
She is funny,
She is the one that looks after you.

She is the one person you can trust,
She is cute,
She is caring,
She is short…………

She is your Nan.
