Do you want to know how you and your daughter can support and help raise money Girls Inc., WHILE doing something awesomely fun and exciting!? Read on! We promise this is something fun!

When the sun rises on the morning of Aug 31, 2014, The Green Beast will come to Fort McMurray, and MacDonald Island Park will be transformed into the craziest live-action game-world of all-time!

The ‘GREEN BEAST’ Challenge (www.greenbeast.me) is a 6-hour amazing-race-style event, which takes place on a live-action course assembled out of carnival rides, obstacle courses, inflatables, games and physical trials.

Us ladies hope to form a team with a bunch of Girls Inc. girls. All we need is your permission for your daughter’s participation (forms can be found at our Summer Camp, office or on our website), $40 to cover the registration fee (as of July 15th this will go up!), your help in gathering pledges for your daughter, and the possibility of you to transport your daughter there on carnival day! (More details will be sent out and solidified as we get closer to the date.) Our fundraising goal is $5,000 and we have a starting goal of $200 raised per girl! But no sweat if you don’t reach the goal! And awesome job if you raise more!!!

If your daughter isn’t much of a carnival goer, you can always just choose to donate money towards our team! We appreciate any support you wish to give us! Also, if you know anyone who might be interested in registering as an individual or team in support of Girls Inc., spread the word! We will be making posts on our Facebook page so your daughter, or yourself, can easily share them.

Or form a team of your own of friends, family or coworkers in support of Girls Inc. (you would be considered a team sponsor), and your team will be added to our Girls Inc. Green Beast fundraising website that can be easily shared online. Rock the Green Beast and support your favorite cause!

Girls Inc. Golf Tournament

While it seems at this time of year most people in the region have traded in their golf clubs for snow shovels, the staff at Girls Inc of Northern Alberta are already working hard to prepare for their 21st Annual Golf Tournament.

The Tournament will be held at Miskanaw Golf Club located at MacDonald Island Park, on Saturday, July 19th, 2014. The event is a fun-filled day on the golf course; complete with a delicious dinner, fabulous prizes, a live auction and of course, a chance to help out a very worthy cause!

Enter a team of 4 for $800 or register as an individual for $200!

3rd Women of Inspiration Series!

Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude are pleased to acknowledge the amazing women who make the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo a great place to live, work and raise families.

The Women of Inspiration (WOI) Series presented by Syncrude honours women who have contributed countless efforts to their community and have inspired other women and girls to embody the Girls Inc. mantra of Strong, Smart & Bold.

Over the course of a year we showcase the stories of local women who are driving positive change for other women and girls, either directly or by example. This will be our third time hosting the series, which will come to a close in May 2014 during Girls Rights Week, and followed by a Women of Inspiration Celebration at the Sawridge Hotel to celebrate all the nominees.

It is our hope that you will join us in our third year of this exciting project and will nominate a woman who has broken boundaries and is a leader within the RMWB.

Nominate An Inspirational Woman

1st Women of Inspiration Nominee of 2014/2015:

Cherly Golosky

Cheryl Golosky was born and raised in Fort McMurray, where she graduated from Father Mercredi High School and then earned her Business Diploma from Keyano College. She worked in the finance occupation for a while, but in 1991, Cheryl decided to make a drastic career change and returned to College to study at the Emergency Medical Technician program at Portage College in Lac La Biche. Once complete, Cheryl applied with the Fort McMurray Fire Department and became the first female EMT-A/Firefighter within the RMWB.

As the only female working in a male dominated field, there were definitely some challenges; however, her commitment and passion for the job soon earned her the respect of her peers. Cheryl has paved the way for women in the field, and the fire department now has 12 women employed on the front line.
