Ponies & Petisos
The 50th edition of the Queen’s Cup is perhaps an opportunity to cast our minds back to the time when in 1891 one of the first Argentine ponies officially arrived in England. “Dublinâ€, played by the number 4 of the Húsares team, a certain Mr. Peters was robust, fast and quick as lightening in a turn was one. “Palefaceâ€, bought in a lot of 12 landed in Liverpool was another. They were soon followed by others, this time registered in the stud book; â€Francescaâ€, a chestnut pony, “Juanitaâ€, and “Outfitâ€. Of these “Francescaâ€, it was noted “ a good polo ponyâ€, a first in the stud book of the time. They were followed by others, but even before these inscription, back in 1897, Argentine teams came to play in England, and together with them came their criollo ponies. That year 23 matches were played, 17 won by the Argentines, and just 3 lost, and the same number drawn. If one remembers that horsepower is still the key to success in polo, that year marked, perhaps for the first time officially, the superiority, in most cases, of Argentine criollo mounts. That superiority remains for the most part uncontested, even if there are each year remarkable ponies from England, Australia, New Zeeland and elsewhere. Watching the Queen’s Cup this year, some things have indubitably changed, but the importance of ponies, and their origins is not (yet) one.
