Reading Partners

Two out of three fourth graders are reading below their grade level, and almost one-third of all children nationwide lack even basic reading skills. Reading is a critical building block for education as a whole, and it seems that many children aren't getting proper reading education. Attempts to remedy this with educational reform have only made slight progress: low-income fourth graders reading at a proficient level only increased a mere seven points from 1998 to 2013.

Of all the different literacy and reading programs designed to improve students' reading ability, one-on-one tutoring has shown the greatest promise in improving children's reading performance. The report Reading Partners: The Implementation and Effectiveness of a One-on-One Tutoring Program Delivered by Community Volunteers covers the story of Reading Partners, a One-on-One volunteer tutoring program that has grown to be a great success. The program is employed in over 130 schools to over 7,000 students, and it's still growing today.
