Welcome!

Dear Friends:

Developing community is central to the College’s mission. During the Spring I session, students participated in Community Days, a two-day event that is part of the City Seminar course. With immigration as the theme, students attended workshops to explore and learn more about the immigrant experience and volunteered with non-profit organizations across the city. These valuable service learning opportunities enabled students to observe the work and advocacy roles of these organizations. Community Days continues to be an important dimension of the college’s community-based learning program using the city as a classroom.

As a fitting follow up to Community Days, the college was proud to host Citizenship NOW! for the third year. The 12th annual Citizenship NOW! hotline was co-sponsored by the New York Daily News and the City University of New York (CUNY) to provide free and confidential citizenship and immigration information to thousands of callers. Among the many public officials who attended the event at the College were State Senator Liz Krueger and City Councilman Daniel Garodnick, who agreed to be interviewed by several Guttman students regarding their thoughts on immigration. Fourteen Guttman students also served as ushers during the event to offer administrative support and to welcome visitors to the call-in.

As summer approaches, we are now preparing for our first commencement and anticipate approximately 20% of our inaugural class will graduate on August 27, 2014. The College has begun to mark the countdown to commencement with a variety of events and activities to showcase the achievements and contributions of our first graduating class. We look forward to celebrating this next important milestone in our short history.

Sincerely,
Scott
