UAE and US Diplomats, LA Mayor Highlight Deepening Bilateral Economic and Cultural Ties with Southern California
During an event co-hosted by the US-UAE Business Council and LA Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Eric Garcetti noted that both LA and the UAE "share a focus on job creation and improving linkages with the global market." The Mayor also remarked how nonstop flights from LAX to the UAE will "open new economic, trade and business doors between our two communities."
UAE Ambassador to the US Yousef Al Otaiba and US Ambassador to the UAE Michael Corbin got a close look at how exports to the UAE support local jobs during a visit to the Crane Hydro Aire facility in Burbank, where over 600 employees manufacture braking systems and other components used in Boeing aircraft that are operated by UAE passenger airlines.
California ranks fifth among US states that export merchandise to the UAE. In 2013, the state exported more than $1.6 billion in goods to the UAE, ranging from agricultural products, to automotive and aerospace equipment, to high-tech products. Over 400 Emirati students also attend universities in California. Underscoring these close ties, Etihad Airways recently launched a daily nonstop flight between Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles, complementing existing Emirates service to Dubai. Learn More >

Abu Dhabi Meets Hollywood

To highlight Abu Dhabi’s emergence as a film and TV production hub in the Middle East, the Emirates-Aspen Partnership organized a panel discussion in Hollywood with Abu Dhabi-based media groups Image Nation and twofour54. US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Charles Rivkin, a former entertainment industry executive, shared his impressions of the UAE’s role as a strong economic US ally. The discussion was moderated by producer Walter Parkes and included twofour54 CEO Noura Al Kaabi, Image Nation Chairman Mohamed Al Mubarak, and British-Emirati filmmaker Ali Mostafa. Learn More >

UAE Opens First US Consulate
Los Angeles political officials, business leaders, and members of the diplomatic community gathered in Century City to mark the opening of the UAE’s first consulate in the US. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Ambassador Al Otaiba and Ambassador Corbin, amongst others, Consul General Abdulla Al Saboosi highlighted the strong trade and cultural ties between the UAE and California, and detailed plans to strengthen relationships on the West Coast. Tenth Annual Healthy Kidney 10K Honors UAE Founder and First President Sheikh Zayed
Over 8,000 men and women participated in the tenth annual UAE Healthy Kidney 10K race, which took place in New York City’s Central Park. Sponsored by the UAE Embassy and organized in coordination with the New York Road Runners, the race supports the National Kidney Foundation’s work to raise awareness of kidney disease and honors the UAE’s founder and first president, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. A kidney transplant recipient himself, Sheikh Zayed benefited from the expertise, knowledge and professionalism of US institutions and doctors. Learn More >

First Major Touring Emirati Art Exhibition Opens in Washington, DC
The UAE Embassy partnered with the Meridian International Center in Washington, DC to unveil the first major exhibition of contemporary art from the UAE to tour the United States: Past Forward. The exhibition features more than 50 paintings, photographs, sculptures and video installations, and represents three generations of 25 Emirati artists – three of whom were in Washington DC to support the exhibition’s opening.
