Biosphere News Bites
June 2014

Dear <<Name>>
Yes - we've done it - we are now a UNESCO World Biosphere site!

We learnt earlier today from UNESCO that we have achieved our aim of the Brighton & Lewes Downs area being internationally recognised for:
  • our high-quality environment
  • everyone's work to look after it
  • our future ambitions to make it even better for people and nature

We are the first completely new World Biosphere site established in the UK for almost 40 years, the first ever in south-east England, and one of only a handful worldwide to include a city.

We are now part of a global family of more than 600 “world-class environments” in over 100 countries, all of which are working to be 'sites of excellence' that try to balance our needs with those of the natural world.

It's thanks to the hard work and support of many local organisations and individuals - including you, as one of our 1500 'Friends of the Biosphere' - over the past six years that we have realised this ambition for our environment to take a place on the world stage.

Thanks for your support!

Join the Party!

Come along to help us celebrate becoming a Biosphere area, at the free Sussex Festival of Nature (formerly called 'Springwatch') at Stanmer Park by Brighton, on Sunday 22nd June (11 am-5 pm)!

There will be a special focus on our new Biosphere status, alongside four fantastic zones: Countryside, Coast, City Parks & Gardens, and the new Eco zone about environmentally-friendly living.

A wide range of free activities will be on offer for all ages, including Biosphere games, birds of prey, heavy horses, sheep-shearing, tractor rides, climbing and Morris dancing.

This year there are special advance bus vouchers to get there for free or half-price, so that you are free to leave the car at home.

Plus this weekend, on Saturday 14th June (10 am-6 pm) the Biosphere team and BHCC park rangers (plus sheep!) will also be at the 'Loving our Level' celebration event on The Level park in Brighton. Drop in and say 'Hi' if you can make it!
Our Biosphere - as you've never seen it before!

We're delighted to now present to you our new video and short film, featuring stunning HD aerial shots of the whole Biosphere area - from Brighton & Hove to Lewes, Shoreham to Newhaven, and the South Downs to the sea.
This will give you a completely fresh view of where we live and the places we love!

These spectacular images were captured from a helicopter using an advanced camera like that used by the BBC in their 'Planet Earth' series, so have been obtained using the latest technology.

The videos have been edited by students from the University of Brighton, and accompanied by original musical scores by students from the University of Sussex.

The video and short film will also be shown daily for the next month on the giant 'green' screen of Brighton's Big Screen on the beach by the Wheel, alongside football World Cup games and films. Go along to get the big picture!

If all this whets your appetite to learn more not just about our local area, but also about our future vision for our environment through the Biosphere project, then here's a reminder to have a listen to Radio Free Brighton's Big Green Interview with us about our thinking.
