The Goddard Connection Week

June 13 through June 20

But Colorful Nonetheless

June 12, 2014

Maybe not rainbow-bright, but "colorful" would undoubtedly be a word that his many admirers would have used to describe Maurice K. ("Doc") Goddard, the "Father of Pennsylvania state parks." You would have to be pretty independent and "secure in your own skin" as the phrase goes now to serve under five different Pennsylvania governors and nearly 25 years in (essentially) the same  position.

Doc at his deskYou also have to have a vision and the uncanny ability to sell that vision to the people who can help you get there! As a result, Pennsylvania gained 45 new parks during those Goddard years and we have much to thank him for and to celebrate.

This week, why not open pages 32 and 33 of the Pennsylvania State Parks & State Forests Passport and find one of those 45 parks you've never visited. Get out there and give a rousing cheer for Doc!
Do not disturb
Well, now. That was very generous of all of you! Since nobody else submitted a photograph this week, we have no choice but to send the Charles Fergus book Natural Pennsylvania to Gloria. Apropos, given that she and Ray celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary by putting their boots on the ground and their mugs on our Facebook page!
Of course, we're tickled as anything to send an anniversary present BUT the only way the GPOC photo gallery gets populated is if you share your pictures. You're going to get mighty tired of seeing PPFF staff having all the fun, right?

Join the Facebook group to share your experiences, or just email your photos. Either way, the beauty of the GPOC is in the sharing!
National Get Outdoors Day
Is Father's Day a "big" enough day for you this week? No? Then let's throw in National Get Outdoors Day for good measure! Where last week's National Trails Day is meant to include a volunteering component, National Get Outdoors Day is time to bring the fun! According to its sponsors, "Prime goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors."

Do you have a friend who's yet to fully grasp why you are so passionate about the outdoors? Saturday is the day for "show and tell." Maybe that "friend" is even your Dad!

PPFF On the Move

It's a VERY busy weekend again, with lots of action on the calendar.

We're co-sponsoring a BioBlitz at Lackawanna State Park on Friday and Saturday, and the first of three Music in the Gap concerts at Cowans Gap on Saturday evening. Crack volunteer (and GPOC expert) Wendy will be at Moraine for their annual GO Day taste of the outdoors fest.

We look at those "free" spaces on your GPOC card as a great place to record a visit with PPFF! What else have you used them for?

Conservation Heroes

The Goddard Connection can be further explored at the website for Pennsylvania's Conservation Heritage (originally the Goddard Legacy Project). We and our partners in the conservation arena are anxious to celebrate all of Pennsylvania's environmental heroes - not just the "famous" ones but also the ones who are or were quietly (or noisily) making sure that the public lands we cherish are still here 100 years from now as they have been for hundreds of years until now.

Do YOU know someone to be celebrated? Let us know! We want to tell the story.

Health Watch

June is Men's Health Month, with a blue ribbon campaign to match the pink for breast cancer awareness. And much like that rosy shade, the azure's purpose goes beyond a traditional "pink is for girls and blue is for boys." Men's Health Month seeks to "heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention share a pretty scary FastStats on their website under the heading of "Health Risk Factors."
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who had 5 or more drinks in 1 day at least once in the past year: 31.4%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who currently smoke cigarettes: 21.2% (2010-2012)
  • Percent of men 20 years and over who are obese: 34.6% (2009-2012)
  • Percent of men 20 years and over with hypertension: 31.6% (2009-2012)
It's worth noting that while women are men's equal in our percentage of obesity and we do worse in hypertension (32.8%), we do not drink as much (only 14.2%) or smoke as much (only 16.6%) and we exercise more (45.7%).

So. Assuming you are a man or have an important one in your life that you'd like to keep around for a while, where do you start? The US Department of Health & Human Services has some tips for small changes to make right now.

Maybe they won't be revolutionary. But maybe they'll lead to a complete overthrow of your current regime!
